Introduction

1 Introduction

This document describes how to install Radio 2203 and Remote Radio Unit
2208 (RRU 2208) on site.

Note: Some illustrations in this document show Radio 2203, which has
TX monitor connection interfaces. RRU 2208 does not have these
connection interfaces.

1.1 Documentation
Make sure that the following
documents are read and understood:

1.2 Tools
Table 1 lists the required tools for installing the radio.

1.3 Conditions
The conditions in this section must be fulfilled before work starts.

1.3.1 Before Going to the Site

Before going to site, make sure of the following:

• Site access permission has been received.

• Documentation stated in Section 1.1 on page 1 is available.

• All applicable tools stated in Table 1 are available.

1.3.2 Before Starting the Installation

Before starting the installation, make sure of the following:

• The site is prepared according to the Site Installation Documentation.

• The ordered hardware is available.

• For rail installation, the rail is installed on the site. For more information on
how to install the rail, refer to Install Rail.

• The power supply for the radio is installed and tested at the radio site.

• The site grounding system is installed and tested.

• Either of the following alternatives must be installed and tested:

0 A main switch and an external fuse

0 A circuit breaker

Unpack and Check Materials

3 Unpack and Check Materials

The radio components are transported in corrugated boxes.

Do not dispose of the packaging as it can be required to return faulty equipment.


For more information about handling faulty equipment, refer to Handling Faulty
Equipment.

To unpack and check the materials, do the following:

1. Examine the packaging for damage.


If it is damaged, immediately register
a complaint with the transport
company. It is recommended that a
photo of the damages be taken to
improve the claims process.

2. Remove the straps from the


corrugated box.

3. Remove the tape from the


corrugated box.

Note: Make sure that the items in the corrugated box are not damaged.

4. Check that the items delivered


correspond to the packing list.

5. Carefully place the radio


components on the ground on
a clean, soft surface, or on the
packaging material.

Note: Make sure to keep the radio components clean from moisture and
dirt.

4.1 Antenna Alternative


The antenna alternative for the radio is shown in Figure 3 and listed in Table 2.

Note: The antenna alternative is not applicable to rail installation, ceiling


installation, and horizontal installation.

Warning!

This section describes how to install the radio. For more information on space
requirements, refer to Remote Radio Unit Description.

Select one of the following alternatives and perform the procedures in the
section indicated:

• To install the radio using a wall installation, see Section 5.1 on page 11.

• To install the radio using a pole installation, see Section 5.2 on page 15.

• To install the radio using a rail installation, see Section 5.3 on page 16.

• To install the radio using a ceiling installation (indoor), see Section 5.4
on page 19.

• To install the radio using a horizontal installation (indoor), see Section 5.5
on page 19.

5.1 Wall Installation


The drilling overview for wall installation is shown in Figure 4.

To install the radio using a wall installation, do the following:

1. Mark a hole in the wall for the upper


hole position on the radio, and drill a
hole. The size and type of drill are
specified in the site installation plan.
The maximum screw diameter size
is 6 mm.

Note: Wear protective equipment when drilling.

2. Insert a plug or an expander bolt


into the hole. Plugs or expander
bolts are not delivered with the unit.
They must be specified by the site
installation plan.

3. Insert a screw in the hole, leaving 10


mm of the screw pointing out from
the wall. Use a flat washer.

4. Hook the Support onto the screw.

5. Mark the holes using the two bottom


holes in the Support. Use a spirit
level to make sure the Support is in
horizontal level.

6. Unhook the Support from the wall.

7. Drill holes in the wall at the markings.

8. Insert a plug or an expander bolt


into the hole. Plugs or expander
bolts are not delivered with the unit.
They must be specified by the site
installation plan.

9. Hook the Support onto the screw.

10. Insert screws in the holes.

11. Tighten the screws according to the


recommendations given by the site
installation plan.

12. Continue the installation of the radio in Section 5.6 on page 19.

5.2 Pole Installation


To install the radio using a pole installation, do the following:

1. Fit the pole clamps to the Support.

2. Mount the pole clamps around the


pole in the desired position.

3. Close the latch on the pole clamps.

4. Tighten the screw.

5.3 Rail Installation


The alternative mounting directions for the radio on rail installations are shown
in Figure 5.

Where to install the mounting bracket on the radio, based on the selected
mounting direction, are shown in Figure 6.

To install the radio using a rail installation, do the following:

1. Fasten the mounting bracket to the


10 mm Support by tightening the bolts.

2. Hook the Support onto the upper


part of the rail.

3. Push the lower part of the Support


against the lower part of the rail.

4. Fit the bolt in the rail groove.

5. Tighten the bolt to fasten the Support

Note: Make sure that the Support is firmly attached to the rail.

6. Continue the installation of the radio in Section 5.6 on page 19.

5.4 Ceiling Installation (Indoor)


To install the radio using a ceiling installation, do the following:

1. Secure the radio to the ceiling using the principles described in Section
5.1 on page 11.

2. Continue the installation of the radio in Section 5.6 on page 19.

5.5 Horizontal Installation (Indoor)


To install the radio using a horizontal installation, do the following:

1. Lay the radio on the horizontal


surface.

2. Secure the radio to the surface using the principles described in Section
5.1 on page 11.

3. Continue the installation of the radio in Section 5.6 on page 19.

5.6 Install Support


Note: For information on cable product numbers, refer to Main-Remote
Installation Products Overview.

To install the Support, do the following:

1. Connect the grounding cable.

4. Remove the protective plug, and

wires, and tighten the screws.

7. Secure the cables in the strain relief

1. Hook (1) the Radio Core onto the

optical cable connector at the
position marked 1.
Be careful when handling SFP
modules. For information on how
to handle SFP modules, refer to
Ge7407B Handling SFP Modules and Optical
Cables.

7. If a second SFP is to be installed, repeat Step 5 to Step 6 at position 2.

8. Remove the fiber protection from the


fibers in the optical cable.
Be careful when handling optical
cables. For more information about
optical cables, refer to Installing
Optical Cables for Main-Remote
Solutions, and Handling SFP
Modules and Optical Cables.

9. Plug in the optical cable (with outer


diameter 4.5–5.5 mm, defined in
standard G657A2) into the SFP
receptacle at position marked 1.

10. If a second optical cable is to be


installed, plug in the optical cable
into the SFP receptacle at position
marked 2.

11. Remove the protective plug from the


power connector on the Radio Core.
Connect the power cable from the
Support to the power connector on
the Radio Core.

Note: Make sure that the cables are routed correctly through the cable
gland.

12. Close the installation hatch, and

5.8 Install Antenna


This section describes how to install the integrated directional Antenna.

Note: The integrated directional Antenna is not applicable to rail installation,


ceiling installation, and horizontal installation.

To install the Antenna, do the following:

1. Hook the Antenna onto the Radio


Core.

2. Route the RF cables through the


cable holders and attach the cables
to the cable clips.

This section describes how to install the esthetic Cover.

Note: Before proceeding with this instruction ensure that the external antenna
has been installed using the applicable instruction.

To install the Cover, do the following:

1. Connect the RF cables to the RF

Note: Make sure to use the correct
cable type with 4.3-10 connector.

6 Verify Radio Installation on Site

This section describes the verification that must be performed to check the
installation of the radio and the connections to the main unit before it is
integrated with the radio network.

6.1 Check Site


This section provides checklists for verifying the radio installation.

6.1.1 Check Grounding System

Use the checklist in Table 4 to check the installation of the grounding system
for the site and the Radio System.

6.2 Power Up Radio


The radio must be powered up within 48 hours after installation, even if it is
not taken into service. The reason is to protect the internal units from local
climate conditions.

Do!

Products not connected to ground risk being damaged by overvoltage or


overcurrent. Always connect products to ground according to instructions.

To power up the radio, do the following:

1. Make sure that the radio is grounded


according to instructions.

2. Switch on the external power to the


radio.

6.3 Check Radio After Power Up


Once the power has been switched on, the radio is loaded with the specific
software. Optical indicators show the status of the radio.

For more information on interpreting the optical indicators on the radio, refer
to Indicators, Buttons, and Switches.

To check the radio after power up, do the following:

1. Open the cover for the optical


indicators.

2. Check that the operation optical


indicator is green. If any red optical
indicator is on, contact the OMC for
maintenance support.

Before leaving the site, perform the following procedure:

1. Install the optional sealing wire.

2. Clean the site and remove objects such as wrapping paper and cable
clippings.

3. Dispose of waste according to local


regulations.
