What is poetry? What the kinds of poetry? What are the genre of poetry?

The modes? And the tones of poetry?

We start in what is Poetry? Poetry (ancient Greek: ποιεω (poieo) = I

create) is an art form in which human language is used for its aesthetic
qualities in addition to, or instead of, its notional and semantic content. It
consists largely of oral or literary works in which language is used in a
manner that is felt by its user and audience to differ from ordinary prose.

It may use condensed or compressed form to convey emotion or ideas to

the reader's or listener's mind or ear; it may also use devices such as
assonance and repetition to achieve musical or incantatory effects. Poems
frequently rely for their effect on imagery, word association, and the
musical qualities of the language used. The interactive layering of all these
effects to generate meaning is what marks poetry.

There are 3 kinds of poetry Narrative, Dramatic, and Lyrical. Fist is the
Narrative is tells stories through verse. Like a novel or a short story, a
narrative poem has plot, characters, and setting. Using a range of poetic
techniques such as rhyme and meter, the narrative poet presents a series of
events, often including action and dialogue. Second is the Dramatic is
also known as a dramatic poem, this is an emotional piece of literature
which includes a story which is recited or sung. It refers to the dramatic
genre of poetry. Till the nineteenth century dramas were written in the
form of verses. The definition of this piece of literature can be quoted as,
'a form of poetry where a story is narrated in the form of a lyrical ballad.'
This kind of poetry has come from Sanskrit dramas and Greek tragedies.
The method adopted in this form is that the story is usually narrated in the
form of a recital or song. Soliloquy and dramatic monologues are the main
instruments of this form of poetry. There are also many examples of
dramatic poetry for children. They are written in such a manner that they
can be easily understood, and enacted. The last is the Lyrical is a verse or
poem that is, or supposedly is, susceptible of being sung to the
accompaniment of a musical instrument (in ancient times, usually a lyre)
or that expresses intense personal emotion in a manner suggestive of
a song. Lyric poetry expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet and is
sometimes contrasted with narrative poetry and verse drama, which relate
events in the form of a story. Elegies, odes, and sonnets are all important
kinds of lyric poetry.

There are 5 genres in poetry, the song and the lyric, sonnet, ballad,
elegy, epic poem. The first genre is song of poetry and the lyric are the
two terms have often been used as synonyms. Some critics, in fact, say
that a lyric is a song without music and reflects a later, more literary
awareness of the same impulse to sing life’s basic themes: love and death.
The second genre is sonnet are another lyric form is that of the sonnet, a
line 14-line structure of Italy origin which has been immensely popular in
English from the Renaissance to present time. There are two kinds of
sonnet the Petrarchan sonnet and has two quatrain and two tercets and
the English Shakespearean Sonnet and has three quatrain and a couplet.
The third genre is Ballad, is technically speaking the ballad can be defined
as a form of popular verse, usually narrative and employing a very direct
and simple metrical pattern: stanzas of four lines(quatrains) rhyming abcb
or abab. The origin of ballad is testified by its name, which comes from
the Old French Balade. The fourth genre is Elegy is one of the oldest
poetical genres, which is a lament for dead person. It often includes a
reflection of transitory nature of life and it ends in a mood of consolation.
The last genre is Epic Poem, along narrative poem usually divide into
books or parts and generally mythological or religious in theme. It tells op
great actions and events that are usually important to a nation or culture.
Epic poems are modelled on classical epics. The first Epic Poem in
English literature is Beowulf.

In poem there are Modes. Modes is identifying modes of poems is an

underused method of diagnosing why they satisfy the reader (or don’t). In
this workshop, we’ll define the four basic modes of poems (lyric,
narrative, argument, description) and read examples of each. Then we’ll
turn to participants’ poems, asking whether the poem’s current structure is
its best structure. To do that, we might imagine a narrative poem as a lyric
or vice versa. Bring copies of two poems of yours that you’re unhappy
with.
Last is the Tones in poetry. What are the tones in poetry? The tones in
poetry is The poet’s attitude toward the poem’s speaker, reader, and
subject matter, as interpreted by the reader. Often described as a “mood”
that pervades the experience of reading the poem, it is created by the
poem’s vocabulary, metrical regularity or irregularity, syntax, use
of figurative language, and rhyme.
Maya Angelou is one of the famous American Poet and also an actress.
