new ace of SEA Games, since the announcement of the renovation of the sports event, it has been one
of the most talked-about subject and gained a lot of interested individuals, especially the gamers.
The insertion of E-Sport in SEA Games was urged by Min-Liang Tan, CEO of Singapore based
gaming firm Razer as he met Alan Peter Cayetano, Philippine SEA Games Organizing committee chair last
November 2018. A total of six games will be included, consist of two mobile games, two PC games, and
two console games – Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Arena of Valor, Dota 2, StarCraft II, Tekken 7, and
Hearthstone.
A step-up has been made, and this year will be the start of something remarkable. The inclusion
of E-Sports in the medaled events can lead to a variety of advantages as it is up-to-date and sensational
game, it will gather attentions from the gamers and non-gamers because of its unusualness. With this, it
will manifest the sporting excellence of the Southeast Asian athletes even more.
Analyst group states, "Esports is a great marketing channel, and most consumer products
targeting people who are also gamers are trying to get their brands into esports… There is an
opportunity now for the intersection of tourism and esports, opening up an avenue for tourism and
travel companies to participate in esports. More opportunities are emerging as the sector matures,
especially in terms of generating chances for non-endemic sponsors to cooperate with the games."
The decision of adding E-Sports in the SEA Games is said to be a groundbreaking milestone, not
just for the local scene, but for the entire industry. A little development will not hurt and a bounty of
bravery for taking risks is a must. E-Sports, looking at different perspectives, is assumed to be a success
and will sure continue to be part of the SEA Games as years go by.
