ENGLISH
Unit 1 (Going to School), Lesson 2
Level: Primary 1
Date: 4 August 2015
Time/ Duration: 60’
Number of students: 28
Main aims:
- to create interest in reading and listening to the next part of the story The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson
and Axel Scheffler;
- to identify and read vocabulary related to body parts;
- to practise taking turns and listening to a partner reading short words;
- to listen to simple instructions and follow them – Rally Read & Round Robin (Simon Says);
Language Focus:
- to recycle the vocabulary items from the previous lesson (hair, face, ear, eye, nose, mouth, teeth, knee,
toe; tusks, jaws, claws) and introduce new ones (head, tongue, arm, hand, finger, thumb, finger, leg, foot,
back, prickles);
Assumed Knowledge:
- some SS might already be familiar with some of the body parts;
- some SS might have played Simon Says before;
- SS are able to say short sentences like Simon says: touch your nose! In order to play the game;
Anticipated problems for students and possible solutions:
- some SS might take longer to find the pages in their TBs as they are using them for the first time – T
monitors closely, helps and starts reading only after everyone is ready, with the books on the desk;
- some SS might not take turns or praise their friends during Rally Read: T monitors closely and reinforces
instructions or models again in front of the class if needed;
- some SS might walk around during the Round Robin of Simon Says: T monitors closely and corrects;
Materials:
Teacher:
- The Gruffalo story book – hard copy and soft copy;
- TB & WB;
- scanned pages: 2 & 3 from the TB;
Students:
- pencils; erasers;
- English TB, WB; Journals; Spelling Notebooks

are on task. If they have problems or do not take turns, T
reminds the teams and models again in front of the class.
T praises the teams that worked really well, for example:
Team 1, I loved the way you played, you stayed close to
your team and listened carefully to Simon. Well done!

T asks S 3 from each team to collect the books and put
