DEPARTMENT OF PETROLEUM ENGINEERING

SUBJECT- FLUID FLOW OPERATIONS

Assignment no 2
1. What is a Rotameter? Describe the construction and Working of Rotameter?
2. A flat plate of area 1.5 x 106 mm2 is pulled with a speed of 0.4m/s relative to another
plate located at a distance of 0.15mm from it. Find the force required to maintain this
speed , if the fluid separating them is having viscosity as 1 poise.( Ans -400N)
3. Determine the viscosity of a liquid having kinematic viscosity 6 strokes and specific
gravity 1.9 (Ans- 11.40 poise)
4. Write the units of Viscosity in MKS and CGS System?Derivation of the units is also
required?
5. Write what do you understand by Surface tension and Capillarity?
6. A U-Tube manometer is used to measure the pressure of water in a pipe line, which is in
excess of atmospheric pressure. The right limb of the manometer contains mercury and
is open to atmosphere. The contact between water and mercury is in the left limb.
Determine the pressure of water in the main line, if the difference in level of mercury in
the limbs of U-Tube is 10cm and the free surface of mercury is in level with the centre of
the pipe. If the pressure of water in pipe line is reduced to 9180N/m. Calculate the new
difference in the level of mercury.(Ans- 12360N/m2)
Assignment no 3
1. The water is flowing through a taper pipe of length 100m having diameter 600mm at
the upper end and 300mm at the lower end, at the rate of 50litres/s. The pipe has a
slope of 1 in 30.Find the pressure at the lower end if the pressure at the higher level is
19.62N/cm2.(Ans- 22.857N/cm2)

2. What are the different Hydraulic co-efficient?

3. Oil of absolute viscosity 1.5 poise and density 848.3kg/m3. Flows thru a 30cm I.D pipe. If
the head losses in 3000m length of pipe is 20m, assuming a laminar flow, determine
● Velocity (Ans- 1.04m/s)
● Reynolds number(Re) (Ans- 1764.5)
● Friction factor (Use Ff = 16/Re) (Ans- 0.00907)
ASSIGNMENT NO 4
1. What is Positive displacement(PD) pump? Derive the equation for flow rate in PD pump.
2. What is Net positive suction head in pump?
3. What is priming in pump?
4. What are the characteristics of centrifugal pump and PD pump?
