Jesus & My City CDO Bible Study Module: Becoming God’s Heroes
Lesson 2
Ice Breaker: Divide the group into 2, depending on how big the group is. Download pictures from the Internet, make the
smaller groups imitate the picture. The one closest to the picture wins.
Topic 2- Noah: A Real Hero does not compromise
Genesis 6
Introduction:
Our game was about imitating what we saw in the picture. But in reality that is a dangerous thing to do. It is not
always a good idea to just imitate how others talk, walk, think and behave. This is especially true today because there is
a thin line between what is right and wrong. Because of the pressure from those around us, it is easier to conform rather
than to do what is right and be different. Yet a real hero is one who stands for what is right no matter what the cost is.
(Ask group to read Genesis 6:1-22). When Adam and Eve sinned against God, sin entered the world. Nine
generations later, mankind had become so wicked that verse 5 says that everything humans thought or imagined were
consistently and totally evil.
Yet when everyone was sinning and failing God, there was one person who never compromised. His name was
Noah. According to verse 9, Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at that time.
You may be wondering how Noah did that? How was he able to walk uprightly before God despite the influence
of the world around him?
Question to answer: How can we, like Noah live uprightly in our generation today?
1. Walk in close fellowship with God. Genesis 6: 9 says that Noah walked in close fellowship with God. If we want
to learn how to live rightly, we have to build a closer relationship with God who is the only standard of what is
right. I believe Noah had his eyes fixed on God. He spent his time knowing God more and seeking His will. He
knew of the things which God approved and the things that God disapproves. More importantly, the Bible says
that we become who we worship. The closer we are to God the closer we are to becoming like Him, a Holy,
Righteous God.
Application today: Almost everyone has his or her opinion of what is right or wrong. We are told to just respect
and accept other’s opinions even if it were not right. It is not wrong to respect others, but with this we should
remember that we cannot make the wrong things right by just saying so (Give examples). God, in his word has
laid down the standards of what is permissible and what is not.
We love everyone, even those who do not share our opinion, but we should not compromise. By
spending time with God through His word, He imparts us with the wisdom so we can discern good from evil.
2. Rely on God’s strength- living uprightly is not about just knowing how to distinguish good from evil. More
importantly, it is being able to choose what is good- which is not as easy as it sounds. Many times we try to do
good, but we find ourselves failing. That is why we have to ask God for the strength to choose what is right and

always walk uprightly, no matter what the people around us may think. Ask the group to give an example of a
situation when they were tempted to compromise.
Let us remember that the bible gives us the assurance in Philippians 4:13 that we can do everything through
Christ who is our strength. We just have to ask of God, and He will surely answer us.
Application today: Through prayer, ask God every day for the strength to do what is right. No matter where we
are either in our campuses, in our workplaces or at home, we need God to enable us. Start the day everyday by
acknowledging God’s power and the strength that is available for us when we ask from Him. If we fail, as we all
sometimes would do, do not condemn yourself, instead ask for God’s forgiveness and rely on His grace and
strength again to do better tomorrow.
3. Surround yourself with the right company – 1 Corinthians 15:33 says that bad company corrupts good
character. It will be much harder to live uprightly when we are surrounded by people who do not have the same
intention. Researchers say that culture is shared. That means that over time, we get to adapt the mindset and
behavior of the people we spend our time with. That is why we have to be wise in choosing where and with
whom we spend much of our time.
Application today: Who do you usually spend most of your time with? What kind of influence do your closest friends
have on you? To surround yourself with the right company does not mean that you should never talk to some
friends anymore. But you have to decide in your heart to spend more time with those who will influence and inspire
you to know God more and do what is right. More importantly, do not forget to find a church where you will be
taught about God and His word.
Conclusion: A real hero is someone who does what is right even if no one else does it. A real hero does not compromise
with sin.
Verse to memorize: Romans 12:2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a
new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing
and perfect.
Question for discussion: In what way have you been compromising lately? Confess them and ask for God’s forgiveness.
Challenge for the week: Make a choice to join this Bible study every week. This is a group where you will be encouraged
and inspired to continue to live uprightly before God.
