BAB I

PRELIMINARY

A. Background
Parts of Speech in English means types of words or word classes. Called "Parts of Speech" -
parts of speech or parts of sentences (remember, basically sentences in language are sentences, not
written) - because these words are an entity that is needed to form a sentence , regardless of their
respective duties or functions. So, those words are the "basic ingredients" in a sentence "building".

So, the words are "basic ingredients" in a sentence "building", not the word "function" in the
sentence. Why is that? Because a word can have several (more than one) functions in a sentence.

There are several types of Parts of speech, namely Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb,
Preposition, Conjunction, Interjection. Each type has a different meaning and function. However, in
this paper we will only discuss one type of Parts of speech, namely Interjection.

B. Problem Formulation
1. What are the meanings, functions, examples and types of interjection?

C. Destination

Interjection is a short word that is used to express a person's emotions or feelings which
are usually followed by an exclamation point.

2. Interjection Function
Interjection words (exclamation words) are often only used in spoken language and very
rarely used in written language, unless written in the form of quotations. Interjection is
widely used to express different feelings.

Interjection/exclamation in English is not always followed by an exclamation point (!), But

can also be followed by a comma (,) to refine the meaning/expression of feelings that are more
subtle. Exclamation points are often used to strengthen the tone of the speech or to convey stronger
feelings such as emotions, anger, surprise, etc.
Example of interjection in a conversation:
Hey => A: hey, are you ok?
B: yes, I’m Ok. Don’t worry about me.
Oh => A: Did Jane come to your house last night?
B: Oh yes of course. We had a nice chit-chat last night.

When inserted in a sentence, interjection is just an additional word that describes the
speaker's emotions / feelings. Example :
 Ups, I made mistake! (Shocked)
 Wow, that’s amazing! (Amazed)
 Auch, i cut my finger! (Sick)

In writing, interjection can be in the form of words, phrases, or single sentences and are
usually separated by commas or exclamation marks.

There are two types of interjection, namely in the form of words/phrases and single
sentences. Interjection in the form of words/phrases can stand alone and can also be used in a
sentence as a complement, while the interjection of what and how is usually located in front of a
single phrase or sentence.

Interjection in the form of words or phrases:

– Oh!
– Ah!
– Eh!
– Hi
– Bravo!
– Yell!
– Goodbye!
– Help!
– Hurrah!
– Hey!
– Oh, my God!
– Pssst…
– Wonderful!
– How beautiful!
– Damn it!
– Bullshit!

Interjection is in the form of a single sentence:

What with construction what + (a/an) + (adjective) + noun, for example:

- What a pretty girl!
- What a big house!
- What a long dress.

How with the how + adjective/adverb construction, for example:

- How interesting!
- How strange!
- How hard!
- I have ever gone to Bali, how beautiful.

The word what and how can mean how, what, really or other interjection words that fit the
situation and conditions. Interjection incorporated in a sentence can have a different meaning. For
example, the word "ah" not only expresses one phrase, but can have several meanings or other
purposes. Example:

 Ah, that feels good.(Ah here expresses feeling happy).

 Ah, now I understand.( Ah here means understanding).

Interjection itself is also a short greeting that is used to express emotions. This English
interjection is one of eight parts of speech.

4. Use of Interjection
Interjection, which is more used in speaking than writing (very rarely in formal or academic
writing), can stand alone or in sentences. If in a sentence, the interjection does not or has almost no
grammatical relationship with the sentence.

5. Punctuation on Interjection

The usual interjection is followed by (comma) or (exclamation mark). Sometimes it can be followed by a
question mark (question mark). Commas are usually for mild interjection where most are parenthetical
elements separated by one comma if they are located at the beginning of a sentence or a set of commas if
they are located in the middle of a sentence, while exclamation marks are used on strong interjection to
express stronger calls such as shock, anger, excitement, as well as other deep feelings. Sometimes
expressions of surprise can also be used by question marks.
