- Alan Kay
Alan Kay
Alan Kay was a child prodigy who
composed original music, built a
harpsichord, and appeared on
NBC as a “Quiz Kid.” Kay’s genius
wasn’t reflected in his grades; he
had trouble conforming to the rigid
structure of the schools he
attended. After high school he
worked as a jazz guitarist and an
Air Force programmer before
attending college.
His Ph.D. project was one of
the first microcomputers, one
of several that Kay would
eventually develop. Alan Kay
led a team of researchers at
Xerox PARC (Palo Alto
Research Center in
Alan Kay’s Dynabook was the
California) in building the early prototype for the modern
computer of the future — a personal computer, combining
features of a laptop computer,
computer that put the user in a tablet PC, and an e-book.
charge.
Alan Kay is one of many people whose
work has had a profound effect on…

our workplaces,
our schools,
and our homes.
