Chapter 8, Lesson 1 &2: Local materials used as applied to contemporary art
Learning Objectives:
 Determine the nature of art in a medium.
 Determine the classification of arts.
 Appreciate how artists differ from one another in their choice of materials.

I. THE NATURE OF ART IN A MEDIUM


MEDIUM – is defined as the materials, or the substance out of which a work is made.
- Artists express and communicate feelings and ideas.
It also defines the nature of the art form with the following artists mentioned below:

Sculptor - uses metal, wood, stone, clay & glass (medium).
-fall within the category of “three-dimensional” art.
- occupy space and have volume.
- Wood carving is a form of a sculpture.
Ex. Guillermo Tolentino’s Oblation

2. - uses wood, bamboo, bricks, stone, concrete and various building


Architect materials.
- differ from sculpture, architecture has added the element of time
(structures).
Ex. Building (3 dimensional)

Part II. Classification of Arts

Environmental Arts occupy space and change in its meaning and function
depending on their categories including architecture, sculpture, and site-specific
works such as installation and public art.

Decorative or Practical Arts is also called useful, functional or manual


arts since those arts were created by people for use in their daily lives.

Dramatic Arts is the art of writing and production of play.

Narrative Arts if based on stories and they include drama, novel, fiction,
nonfiction, music and dance.

Musical & Auditory Arts include music, poetry (those that have
perceptible rhythm and can be sung or danced to) and dance that is
accompanied by music. (music, drama, spoken literature, etc.)

Pictorial Arts include painting, drawing, graphics and stage and


production design (lighting, dress props, and set)

Combined Arts can be integrated in all art forms, such as design, mixed
media, photography, film, video, performance art, theater productions
and installation.

Fine Arts is a type of art (such as painting, sculpture, or music) that is done to create beautiful things

Local Materials use by Indigenous People in the Philippines.

CONTENT:

 Identify the materials used in contemporary art.
 Describe how technology has redefined art.
 Make an artwork using selected materials creatively
 Explain the process of making one’s artwork

ontemporary artists feel free to experiment with materials and use technology to explore possibilities.
What would you do with the old textile, used plastic bottles or abaca?
How can indigenous materials, found objects, recycled materials be combined to make an artwork?
Can you use the computer to plan an art space before installing an artwork?

C
ontemporary artists salvage materials that can be recycled and made into creative forms.
-combine structures and wood and interact with the wind to make music.
EXAMPLE:
a. CHIME HALO- a hanging bamboo chimes that create sound when blown by the
wind done by Cavite-born artist Impy Pilapil.

b. Project Belonging – by Los Banos, laguna artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, who gathered used objects,
clothes, personal accessories and many other things and compress them into cube-shapes.
-represent the boxes sent by Overseas Filipino workers to their family left behind.

* SOME ARTISTS combine indigenous material with textile and mount these on a painted surface.
Paper as an art medium is explored by Artist like Mona Alcudia of Cebu, who make solid forms as well as
transparent artworks using paper.

 In OUTDOOR SCULPTURE, they use lot of brass welded together and mounted on concrete. Wood and
glass are used for indoor sculpture.
 PAINTING is no longer confined to canvas hung on the wall but found on ceilings and floors.
Example: Singapore Alkaff Art Bridge, painted by Batanes-born artist Pacita Abad with 2,350 multiple
colors.

L OCAL ARTISTS lead the community or students in painting murals on walls to make a more pleasant
environment and to raise consciousness towards environmental protection.

In ARCHITECTURE;
 Use of glass and steel
 Lot of building construction such as malls, convention centers, business process centers, industrial parks
and government service buildings.
In PERFORMANCE ART,
 Use of variety of props such as rope, plastic, textile and found objects.
 Paint is also used for body art.
Example: Cagayan de Oro artist Nicolas Aca, who paints his body to project an effect.

T echnology has also redefined art in many ways.


Examples:
1. Light structures and floor drawings using colored laser beans and smoke
2. Tubes hanging on the ceiling that respond to the viewer’s movements sound and touch.
3. A wall-climbing robot holding a paint
4. A pen controlled by a software program to create patterns
= artists have to upgrade their skills and learn the use of computer program and its applications.
 Welding is also useful for fabrication and building structure (requires physical strength and special tools.
 Some materials have chemical components –hazardous to health such as acid, resin, and fiber glass.
= availability and variety of materials and the possibilities offered by technology expand the choices of artists
(essential to the development of contemporary art).
