Output Devices
 Output:
“The amount of something that is produced by a person or thing: something (such as
power, energy, or information) that is produced by a machine or system.”

 Output Devices:
“An output device is any device used to send data from a computer to
another device or user. Most computer data output that is meant for humans is in the form of
audio or video.”

 Example:
Following are the examples of output devices.
 Monitors.
 Printers.
 Plotters.
 Multimedia Projector.
 Voice response system.
 Types of Output:
Following are the types of output:
 Soft-copy Output.
 Hard-copy Output.
 Soft-copy Output:
“A soft copy is the unprinted digital document file, often contrasted with
hard copy. A soft copy of a document can usually be viewed through use of an
appropriate editing program.”
 Example:
For example, database programs and words spoken out by a voice response
system.
 Hard –copy Output:
“A computer output printed on paper, film, or other permanent, tangible
medium, as distinguished from information on a computer disk or in computer
memory. Hard copy is not exactly carved in stone, but it cannot easily be changed.”
 Example:
For example, output produced on paper by printers or plotters are hard are hard-
copy output.
 Monitor:
“ Monitors commonly called as Visual Display Unit (VDU),are the main output
device of a computer. It forms images from tiny dots, called pixels that are arranged in
rectangular form. The sharpness of the image depends upon the number of the pixels.”
 Types of Monitor :
Following are the basic types of monitor:

 Cathode-Ray Tube (CRT) Monitor.

 Liquid Crystal Display (LCD).
 Light-emitting Diode (LED).

(CRT) (LCD) (LED)

 Cathode-Ray Tube (CRT):

“(CRT) a vacuum tube used as a display screen in a computer monitor or TV.
The viewing end of the tube is coated with phosphors, which emit light when struck
by electrons.”

 LCD:
(LCD TV) are television sets that use liquid-crystal displays to produce images.
LCD televisions are thinner and lighter than (CRTs) of similar display size, and
available in much larger sizes. “

 Light-emitting Diode (LED):

(LED) is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electronic
current passes through it. The light is not particularly bright, but in most LEDs it is
monochromatic, occurring at a single wavelength.”

 Plotter:
“A plotter is a printer that interprets commands from a computer to make line
drawings on paper with one or more automated pens. Unlike a regular printer ,
the plotter can draw continuous point-to-point lines directly from vector graphics files
or commands.”

 Types of Plotter:
Following are the types of plotter:
 Drum Plotter.
 Flatbed Plotter.

(Flatbed Plotter) (Drum plotter)

 Drum Plotter:
A drum plotter is also known as Roller Plotter. It consists of a drum or roller on
which a paper is placed and the drum rotates back and forth to produce the graph on
the paper. It also consists of mechanical device known as Robotic Drawing Arm that
holds a set of colored ink pens or pencils. The Robotic Drawing Arm moves side to
side as the paper are rolled back and forth through the roller. In this way, a perfect
graph or map is created on the paper.

 Flatbed plotter:
It plots on paper that is spread and fixed over a rectangular flatbed table. The
flatbed plotter uses two robotic drawing arms, each of which holds a set of colored ink
pens or pencils. The drawing arms move over the stationary paper and draw the graph
on the paper. Typically, the plot size is equal to the area of a bed. The plot size may be
20- by-50 feet. Flatbed plotter is very slow in printing graphs. The large and
complicated drawing can take several hours to print.

 Multimedia projector:
A multimedia projector is a compact, high resolution, full-color projector capable of
projecting text, images, video and audio content. Typically the projector will feature
inputs for a computer, DVD player, VCR, CD player and storage device.

 Voice Response System:
“(VRS) is a computer interface which responds to voice commands, instead
of responding to inputs from a mouse or a keystroke. It is a type of speech synthesis
where sentences are organized by concatenating pre-recorded words saved in a
database.”

 Types of Voice Response System:

Following are the types of (VRS):
 Voice reproduction system.
 Speech Synthesizer.
 Voice Reproduction System:
A voice reproduction system produces audio output by selecting an appropriate
audio output from a set of pre-recorded audio responses. The set of pre-recorded
responses include words, phrases or sentences spoken by human beings, music or
alarms generated by musical instruments.
 Speech synthesizer:
Speech synthesis is the artificial production of human speech. A computer system
used for this purpose is called a speech computer or speech synthesizer, and can be
implemented in software or hardware products.
 Printer:
A printer is a device that accepts text and graphic output from a computer and
transfers the information to paper, usually to standard size sheets of paper.
 Types of Printer:
Following are the types of printer:
 Impact printer.
 Non-Impact printer.
 Impact Printer:
In this type of printer hammer strike against the printer through ribbon. Printing
quality of impact printer is not good. It create noise while printing
 Types of Impact printer:
Following are the types of impact printer.
 Dot-Matrix Printer.
 Daisy-wheel Printer.
 Line Printer.
(Dot Matrix) (Line Printer)

(Daisy-wheel Printer)

 Dot-Matrix Printer:
In the market one of the most popular printers is Dot Matrix Printer. These printers are
popular because of their ease of printing and economical price. Each character printed
is in form of pattern of dots and head consists of a Matrix of Pins of size (5*7, 7*9,
9*7 or 9*9) which comes out to form a character that is why it is called Dot Matrix
Printer.

 Daisy-wheel Printer:
Head is lying on a wheel and pins corresponding to characters are like petals of Daisy
(flower name) that is why it is called Daisy Wheel Printer. These printers are generally
used for word-processing in offices which require a few letters to be sent here and
there with very nice quality.

 Line Printer :
Line printers are the printers which print one line at a time.
 Types of line printer:
Following are the types of line printer:
 Drum printer.
 Chain/Band Printer.

 Drum printer:
An old line printer technology that used formed character images around a
cylindrical drum as its printing mechanism.
 Chain/Band Printer:
In this printer, chains of character sets are used so it is called Chain Printer. A standard
character set may have 48, 64, or 96 characters.

(Chain Printer)
 Non-Impact Printer:
“Non-impact printers print the characters without using ribbon. These printers print a
complete page at a time so they are also called as Page Printers.”

 Types of Non-Impact Printer:

These printers are of two types:
 Laser Printer.
 Inkjet Printer.

 Laser Printer:
These are non-impact page printers. They use laser lights to produce the dots needed
to form the characters to be printed on a page.

 Inkjet Printer:
Inkjet printers are non-impact character printers based on a relatively new technology.
They print characters by spraying small drops of ink onto paper. Inkjet printers
produce high quality output with presentable features. They make less noise because
no hammering is done and these have many styles of printing modes available. Color
printing is also possible.
