Module 2 CT Assign

This document discusses analyzing a student's pre-assessment results in order to plan lessons. It describes administering a 10 question pre-test on Greek and Latin roots and affixes to an 8th grade student named Shahla' Al-Jawhari. She scored 40%, showing a lack of knowledge in prefixes and suffixes. To address this, the teacher plans to assign videos for her to watch at home along with discussion questions. In class, the plan is to have a group activity and read a story identifying roots, suffixes, and prefixes to help reinforce the concepts. The purpose is to use the pre-assessment results to determine what the student needs extra help with and tailor instruction accordingly.

Analysis of student pre-assessment

The purpose of a pre-assessment is to help teacher plan a lesson and gauge and recall

students’ prior knowledge of the topic. It helps the teacher predetermine what information of the

lesson needs more or less attention and focus in class. The pre-assessment allows the teacher to

save class time and helps in planning engaging activities. Additionally, it is an aid to determine

which students will need more attention in the lesson. Guskey (2018) mentions, “ Important

research evidence shows prerequisite pre-assessments can be particularly beneficial, but only

when teachers use the resulting information to help students master specific prerequisite

knowledge and skills so to prepare for upcoming learning tasks” (Richland, Kornell, & Kao,

2009).

A pre-assessment test was posted and administered on Google Classroom using Google

Forms on Greek and Latin root words and affixes was created for my Grade 8 student, Shahla’

Al-Jawhari. The test had a total of 10 multiple questions with a combination of difficult to easy

of root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Based on the results of the pre-assessment, Shahla’

received a result of 40% which shows that she does not have enough knowledge of Greek and

Latin words and most likely needs a review in class to refresh her memory of prefixes and

suffixes. Prefixes and suffixes were general words and the roots words were somewhat difficult.

Therefore, due to the low grade received, the plan of action is to assign two videos on

Google Classroom for the student to watch at home. Along with the videos, questions were

posted on the platform to be answered in the comment box and/or be brought into the class for

further discussion. In class, along with the discussion and questions, a group activity is planned.

After the group activity, as a class the story would be read and words having Greek or Latin root

words, suffixes and prefixes would be identified, and the broken down for understanding.
