Lesson Plan Class VII

The lesson plan is for a 7th grade chemistry class about atoms and molecules. The class will last 40 minutes. The objectives are to teach students about the basic principles of chemistry, develop problem solving skills, and inculcate values of honesty and environmental preservation. Specific objectives are for students to define and differentiate between atoms and molecules, state symbols of some elements, and make models of molecules. The class will begin with an introduction defining matter and atoms as the basic unit of matter. Students will then learn about John Dalton defining the atom and characteristics of atoms. The class will involve an activity making models of molecules in groups. At the end, students will recap what they learned and have an assignment to make models

LESSON PLAN

CLASS: VII DATE: 07-02-19

SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY TIME: 40 MIN

TOPIC: ATOMS AND MOLECULES

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

 To promote understanding of basic principles in Chemistry while retaining the

excitement in Chemistry.
 To develop positive scientific attitude, and appreciate contribution of Chemistry
towards the improvement of quality of human life.
 To develop problem solving skills and nurture curiosity in students.
 To inculcate values of honesty, integrity, cooperation, concern for life and
preservation of the environment.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to:

 Recall what matter is.

 Recognize atom as the basic unit of matter.
 Define atom.
 State symbols of some of the elements.
 Define molecules.
 Differentiate between atoms and molecules.
 Make models of some of the molecules like carbon dioxide, water ,oxygen etc.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: Students are already aware of:

 Matter and its existence in three states namely-solid,liquid and gaseous

 Elements, compounds and mixtures.
 Chemical formulae of some of the compounds.

TEACHING AIDS:

 Classroom environment.
 Sheet of paper
 Colourful balls and toothpicks
INTRODUCTION:

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

Teacher: Look around the classroom. What do Student: Matter, atoms, solid stuff.
you think makes up all the items in the
classroom?
All living and non-living things around us are
made up of matter.
Teacher: Define matter. Student: Matter is anything that occupies space
and has mass and this matter can exist in all the
three states like solid, liquid and gaseous.
Teacher: let's take the objects here like Duster, Student: Yes, because they are made up of
water and air filled in a balloon. different matter.
Are all these things different from one another
?
Teacher: Have you ever observed a mason
building a wall ,from these walls a room and
then collection of rooms to form a building.
What is the building block of the huge Student: Bricks
building?
Teacher: What about the building block of an Student: A small grain of sand
ant hill?
Similarly the building block of all the matter is
atoms.
Teacher: Now here comes a question that we Students look confused and are seen discussing
call the basic unit of living matter is cell. So, amongst themselves.
how come the building block of all matter is
atom?
Teacher: Yes, basic unit of all matter is atom
only. As cells are in turn made of millions of
atoms.

PRESENTATION:

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

Teacher: Take this sheet of paper and keeping Student performs the activity.
tearing till you cannot further tear it apart.
What did you get? Student: smallest piece of paper
Similarly if we go on dividing matter ,a stage
will come when particles obtained cannot be Students listen to the explanation inquisitively
divided further.
In the 17th century ,the British scientist John
Dalton termed the smallest particle of matter
an atom.
In your previous chapters you have studied
classification of matter into pure and impure
substances.
Teacher: What are pure substances and impure Student: Pure substance: Element and
substances ? compounds ,Impure substances: Mixtures
So finally all the elements, compounds and
mixtures are made up of? Student:Atoms
Let us study characteristics of atoms which is
making up all the matter different from one
another.
1.The Atoms of an element are all alike i.e. Student:Pure substance that cannot be split into
they have the same properties . simpler substances .
Teacher: What is an element ?
Teacher: Yes
2.The atoms of an element are different from
those of other.
3. The atoms of an element show all the
properties of the element
Teacher: When a teacher enters your classroom Student: She calls our name.
how she calls you people.
Why ? Student: To avoid confusion
Yes, Similarly to avoid confusion we have a
shortest name for each element which are
called symbols.
Like for Hydrogen it is ‘H’
Oxygen-‘O’
Carbon-‘C’
Nitrogen-‘N’

Teacher: Atoms generally do not exist

independently. So they go and bind with other
atoms so that they can exist and hence form a
molecule.
When they do so they either go and combine
with atoms of same element or atoms of
different elements thereby forming molecule of
an element or molecule of a compound
respectively
Teacher performs an activity:
Teacher divides the class in four groups and Students perform the activity in groups and try
distributes some balls labelled as atoms of making the molecules of given compounds.
hydrogen carbon, oxygen and carbon.
As you people are aware of some of the
formulae of some compounds form molecules
of
1.Water
2.Hydrogen
3.Carbon dioxide
Therefor molecule is the smallest part of an
element or compound that can exist
independently and take part in a chemical
reaction.
RECAPITULATION:

 What is an atom ?
 What is a molecule?
 Differentiate atoms and molecules.
 State symbols of Carbon,hydrogen,oxygen,nitrogen,sodium

HOME ASSIGNMENTS:

 Make models of methane and ammonia molecule.

VALUES: Working in group, sharing information.

SKILLS DEVELOPED: Thinking skills, observation skills
