These instructions show how a user may create an image of his/her computer for backup/restore purposes.

Before you get started - to follow these instructions you will need a blank CD-R or CD-RW and a blank 3.5”
floppy, and you need to be logged in to the Marshall domain.

The first step in creating an image of your computer is to install the Symantec Ghost Tools. To start the
installation process click on the “Start” button then click on “Run” as shown in the diagram below.

A Run dialogue box will appear like the one below. In the space provided type in the following exactly as it
appears \\munt01\munet\distributions\ghost\Ghost 7.50 Standard (Full CD). This will take you to the folder on
the network where the installation files reside.

The following box should appear. You will want to double click on the “NCDStart.exe” icon. This will begin
the installation process. NOTE: If you wish to cancel the installation process you can click on the “Cancel”
button on any screen. This will
cancel the installation of the
Symantec Ghost Tools.

The second will be the License Agreement dialogue
box. Read through the agreement and if you agree with

through the information and if you understand the
information click on the “I have read and understood
the above information” box and click “Next” to
continue.

One last dialogue box will appear. If you wish to

follow the suggestion stated you may do so and then
return to the installation process. You will find the
“Getting Started” Adobe Acrobat guide in the
“Documentation” folder you see listed in the “Ghost
7.50 Standard (Full CD)” root folder, if you do not

Once the installation process is completed you will
see a screen, like the one to the left, informing you
that the installation process is complete. Click the
“Finish” button to exit the InstallShield Wizard.

You have now successfully installed the Symantec

Ghost Tools. You now need to close out any open
windows you have and click again on the “Start”
button. Move your cursor to the “All Programs”
button and search for a folder called “Symantec
Ghost”. Highlight that folder with your mouse and
you should see a list of applications within that folder.
You will want to highlight and click on the “Ghost
Boot Wizard” application. You will see this
illustrated below.

A screen will appear and the Ghost

Boot Wizard application will now
launch. You will have five options
to choose from. You will want to
click on the fourth option “CD-
ROM Boot Disk” option. This will
load generic CD-ROM drivers and
will allow you to create a bootable
CD. Once you have clicked on the
fourth option click “Next” to begin
the boot disk creation process. At
this point you will need a blank 3.5” floppy disk.

You will now be guided through several options.

You will first be asked which version of DOS you
wish to use in the boot package. Accept the default of
PC-Dos and click “Next” to continue as you see
below.
As you see to the left, the next option will ask you
which client you wish to be included in the boot
package and will also allow you to select a different
path to install the files from. Only the “Symantec
Ghost” is available so accept the default option and
path. Click “Next” to continue. You will now see a
screen that suggests you accept the defaults as listed.
Accept the default options and click “Next” to
continue.

You will now see a Review dialogue box as you see

below asking you to confirm the details of your
options. Accept the defaults and click “Next” to
continue.

the floppy drive of the computer. You will see a

to format your floppy disk.
You will now see a warning box like the one to the right
reminding you that ALL data on the floppy disk will be erased.
If you still wish to continue format the floppy disk in the drive
click “OK” to continue, if not, insert a floppy disk you wish to
format then click the “OK” button to begin.

Once the format process is complete a dialogue box will appear like the one Deleted: O
to the right and ask you to click “OK” to continue the boot disk creation
process. Do so at that time. Deleted: Missing the next screen shot

At this point, if you wish to create another boot
disk simply click on the “Start Again” button. If
you do not wish to create another boot disk click
on the “Finish” button to continue.
You are now ready to begin creating an image of your computer. If you have the Norton Antivirus Client Deleted: ¶
installed on your computer you will need to remove the floppy disk from the drive in order to restart your Deleted: ¶

computer. After your computer shuts down but before it starts to reboot reinsert the floppy disk into the floppy ¶
drive. This will allow your computer to boot from the floppy disk, the proper drivers to install, and the Ghost ¶

application to initialize. If your computer loads Windows then it did not boot from the floppy; in this case ¶
perform another restart and be prepared to press the F12 function key immediately during startup so you can Y
select the boot device (call the Help Desk at 696-3200 if you need help here).

As your computer boots from the floppy you will see a sequence of drivers and files scroll down the screen.
There may be some error messages that flash by on the screen. Do not worry about those. These are related to
drivers looking for specific devices and if none of the devices are connected to or installed on your computer
they will report an error. This should not affect the imaging your computer.

Once your computer reboots the Ghost application will automatically start. NOTE: While in Ghost you may
either use your mouse or keyboard to navigate through the application.

o When the application initializes you will see an “About Symantec Ghost” screen. Read through the
material and either click the “OK” button or press the “Enter” key.
o You should now see the main application screen. In the lower left hand corner of the screen will be a
dialogue box several options the first being “Local”. Press your “Right Arrow” key once or click on
the “Local” icon.
o You should now see three other options, the first being “Disk”. You will want to press your “Right
Arrow” key once again or click on the “Disk” icon. This should give you three more options, the first
of these being “To Disk”.
o Press your “Down Arrow” key once to highlight “To Image” and press your “Enter” key or simply
click on that icon.
o Ghost will now determine the size of your hard drive and will display a screen entitled “Select local
source drive by clicking on the drive number”. If you have more than one hard drive installed on
your computer you may see more than one option. Click on the drive you want to image or use your
arrow keys to navigate to the drive. Now either click on the “OK” button or using the “Tab” key
highlight the “OK” button and press the “Enter” key to continue.
o You should now see a screen that says “File name to copy image to”. You will want to either use your
mouse to click on the down arrow next to the “Look in:” box or use your “Tab” key until you highlight
that box and then press your “Down Arrow” key. You should now see a list of drive locations. You
will want to either click on the option that is your CD writable drive or use your arrow keys to highlight
the drive and press the “Enter” key. After you select your CD writable drive either click on the “Save”
button or use your “Tab” key to navigate to it and press the “Enter” key.
o You will now see a dialogue box asking you if you wish to compress the image. There are two options;
“Fast” and “High”. The “Fast” option uses less compression but is quicker and the “High” option uses
more compression but is slower. If wish to do either click on the option you want or use your “Tab”
key navigate to the option want and press the “Enter” key.
o The next box you see will be asking you if you wish to make the CD bootable. If you want to be able to
boot from the CD and not have to use the floppy disk either click on the “Yes” button or press the
“Enter” key. If you do not, click on the “No” button or use the “Tab” key to highlight that option and
press the “Enter” key.
o The next box you see will ask you if you have the floppy disk ready in drive A: which is the floppy
drive. If the floppy disk is in the drive either click on the “Yes” button or use your “Tab” key to
navigate to “Yes” and press the “Enter” key. If the floppy disk is not in the floppy drive insert it at this
time and select “Yes”.
o The application will then read your floppy disk, collect that and any other information it needs. You
will then be asked if you are ready to proceed with the backup. If you are ready to proceed, either click
or navigate to “Yes” and continue.
