After watching this documentary about the life of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, I felt
really proud that I was born a Filipino. This film made me feel inspired and to become a better
Filipino citizen in our own country.
We all know that Philippines is really rich in culture especially in history - history that we
should pass on to every generation. I must say that the story of the life of Rizal is very
meaningful and inspiring to the point that you will be asking yourself if you could ever do that
too even on your next life or what can I do for my country, at least, can I sacrifice my own life
for my fellow countrymen, what is it like to be Rizal?
Rizal is not just a hero to our country but a symbol of unity. To be frankly honest, without
him, there would be no freedom. This is because he died for the country and until his last breath,
he still thinks of his country and fellow countrymen. His death became an eye-opener for
everyone to act and realize that it is time to fight back, that they can no longer ignore abusive
authorities. This is our country; we are the ones that should be setting rules not them - Spaniards.
They are not the one who will tell us what to do or not or telling us what we can do or can't do.
As the quotes says "Pen is mightier than a sword", indeed I do believe in this. Rizal
wrote two eye-opener novels which made the Spaniards alarmed and frightened- the Noli Me
Tangere and El Filibusterismo - these novels aimed to spread the wrongdoings of the Spanish
priest and how they abuse their power. These were also written in Spanish because they are the
audience. Right after the copies became popular to some, it was then sent to the Philippines and
they banned it. Mainly because they are guilty of their wrongdoings and could they thought that
this could be the start of revolution against them. I can say that the novel is truly an art full of
passion and I am dreaming that one day I could be able to publish such stories - to share all my
thoughts, to be an eye-opener to each and every Filipino all around the world. Writing is not as
easy as it seems because ideas and thought just don't come out as a whole as it would take a long
period of time for it to process for you to scribble it all down before it becomes something that
can influence and allure your readers and/or audiences. Indeed, it feels great when you get to
write afterwards, this beautiful form of art got published and be remembered by everyone forever
because as the documentary said, "Pen can write ideas, you can kill the writer but not the idea."
As they say, blood is thicker than water. Many turn their backs to Rizal but not his family.
Just like any average family, they may not agree in every decision they make but will always
support them like the family of Rizal. I admire his brother, Ponciano, who really pushed him to
study abroad, to learn more and hone his skills. In reality, we all have different family and we
can't choose as to which family you will be part of. It is up to Him which family you would
belong. I am lucky as I have a family who will support me and will always look after me and
guide me in everything I experience in life. Some people do not have this kind of family as some
were abandoned before they can even learn to walk and speak. Rizal will not be he hero we all
knew if it wasn't for his family. Perhaps, he also wants to serve our country so he can also save
his parents, brothers and sisters from the abusive Spaniards.
Our culture will never be as great as it is if the foreign countries did not colonize us.
Rizal's life was a fusion of envy, inspiration, gloom and yearning. His life was a life of
determined mastery of whatever he laid his eyes on, he will see to it that he'll get and apply it. It
made me feel somewhat associated in him and inspired me because of his unending will.
It is true that pen is mightier than a sword, as swords can only do so little and that it has
to be wielded along with violence, the other hand, the pen and paper which he used to
communicate his ideas, he possess a subtle genius - behind his writings, there is an idea - and
ideas that are bulletproof, its effect so subtle yet a strong force to reckon with. It was he, the
great writer, our national here, Jose Rizal, a genius in his own right.
As his words will live, "Genius has no country, genius burst from everywhere, is like light
and air - the patrimony of all; cosmopolitan as space, as life as God." - Dr. Jose Rizal
