Test 1

This document contains instructions for a test in Operations Research. It lists 4 questions: 1) Find the probability of catching 1 fish in 30 minutes and 3 fish by noon if fishing at a Poisson rate of 2 fish per hour. 2) Derive the expression for steady state probabilities Pn for a birth-death process. 3) Analyze a doctor's clinic with Poisson patient arrivals of 30 per hour and exponential service times of 30 per hour, including effective arrival rate, probability of no wait, expected patients, and expected wait time. 4) Analyze a police department with 5 patrol cars that breakdown exponentially at a rate of 30 days and are repaired exponentially in

HYDERABAD CAMPUS
SECOND SEMESTER 2013-2014
AAOC C312/MATH F242: OPERATIONS RESEARCH
TEST I (CLOSED BOOK)
Date: 20-02-2014 Max. Marks: 30
Day: THURSDAY Time: 1 Hour.
________________________________________________________
Note: Answer all the questions. Marks for each question are given at the end of the question.

1. A fisherman catches fish at a Poisson rate of 2 per hour from a large lake
with lots of fishes. If he starts fishing at 10 AM, what is the probability that
he catches 1 fish by 10.30 AM and 3 fishes by noon? (4M)

2. Write down the steady state difference equations for the birth and death
process and derive the expression for steady state probabilities 𝑃𝑛 . (6 M)

3. Patients arrive at a doctor’s clinic in a Poisson fashion at an average rate of

30 patients per hour. The waiting room does not accommodate more than 14
patients. Examination time per patient is exponential with an average rate of
30 per hour. (8 M)
(a) Find the effective arrival rate at the clinic.
(b)What is the probability that an arriving patient will not wait?
(c) What is the expected number of patients in the clinic?
(d) What is the expected waiting time until a patient is discharged from the
clinic?

4. ABC township police department has 5 patrol cars. The time until break-
down of a car is exponential with mean 30 days. The police department has
two repair workers, each of whom takes an average of 3 days to repair a car.
Repair time is exponential.
(a) Calculate the steady state probabilities 𝑃𝑛 (𝑛 = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
(b) Determine the average number of police cars in good condition.
(c) Find the average down time for a police car that needs repairs.
(d) Find the fraction of time a particular repair worker is idle. (12 M)
