I. Objectives

a. To explain what a career talk is

b. To explain what are the careers of mechanical engineer is all about

c. To explain how it will help in making our career a better

II. Introduction

Career Talk is essential for those in the Mechanical Engineering industry to

succeed, particularly as the Mechanical Engineering industry has been in so

much turmoil in recent years which has resulted in job opportunities having

shrunken tremendously. For this reason planning and setting milestones for your

desired career path in Mechanical Engineering is essential. Doing this will give

you a sense of direction, the opportunity to reflect on how your career path is

progressing, whether you are achieving the milestones that you have set yourself,

and the opportunity to recognize where things may be going wrong. In order to

progress in your career and achieve the goals that you have set yourself, you will

need to plan forward, and work on developing your skill set. You will also need

to actively pursue employee development opportunities that may arise and to

ensure that you gain the relevant work experience needed.

3
In order to really succeed, you need to take charge of your career, and to take

ownership for shaping it and ensure that it is moving in the direction you want it

to go.

III. Theory/Hypothesis

A good mechanical engineer will spend time both in the office environment and

also in a field/shop floor environment. As everyone knows, that can be a

challenge. The mentality though is of being white collar visiting blue collar.

In my career I have worked in all kinds of environment. Sometimes it is sharing

an office with other engineers, sometimes you own office but increasingly the

cube of even shared cube. A modern development is no dedicated office space.

All cubes belong to all people. A consideration is not all offices are modern or

clean. This can depend on the age of the company and how removed you are

from the shop floor.

Equipment is usually fairly modern but do not be surprised at getting a second

hand desk, computer, etc., if you are new to the industry. (Perhaps I might

suggest when going for an interview you look at the environment around you

and realize it is probably the better end.)

Working hours are typically 8 to 5 but as a mechanical engineer there is a

standard set and you are expected to deliver on time and in budget. So you will

be expected to work as the job demand. Overtime is not something an office

4
dweller gets. Weekend working can be expected - especially if it involves field

work.

It is not possible to cover such things as compensation but it is wise to

assume you will not get a rise in salary for at least two years. Not because you do

not deserve it but because you are still being established. You will be rewarded

and mechanical engineering is an amazing career choice.

IV. Discussion

A conversations, such as those that make interviews, generally are analyzed

in terms of the content of the talk. This talk tends to be attributed turn by turn to

individual speakers, as if what one person said was independent from what

another person said, somehow a reflection of what is in the mind of a person.

Such an approach, however, does not allow us to understand how a conversation

unfolds; it does not allow us to understand the conversation as a dynamic event

in and off itself. Moreover, a synchronic approach, which takes the entire

transcript as if it had been produced as one piece does not allow us to understand

the constitution of the content.

This content emerged from the interactions that also produced the interview

as a situation, as the participants provide each other with the resources required

for knowing if you are on track in a process that in many cases none of the

participants knows beforehand what it will eventually look like after the fact.

5
V. Conclusion

The Mapúa also offers "Career Talks" where students learn from alumni and

individuals working in international careers or graduate student about the nature

and scope of the work they do and the path that they took to their career. The

"Career Talks" are also designed to connect students and alumni for the purpose

of educational and career advice and mentorship.

VI. Recommendation

As a recommendation, I would like to say that career talk like this should be

more specific to be able to promote the career of the students and to be able to

inspire future engineers in doing projects the same thing they did.

I would also recommend that more pioneer of mechanical engineers should

be done that would somehow benefit not only us, but also the people who would

like to be a mechanical engineers.
