The Chinese University of Hong Kong

This document provides a set of exercises to prepare students for an introduction to topology course. It includes 6 questions about set theory concepts like functions between sets, equivalence relations, arbitrary products and unions of sets, countable and uncountable sets, and examples of groups. The exercises are intended to assess students' foundation in set language needed for the course.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
MATH3070 (Second Term, 2017–2018)
Introduction to Topology
Exercise 0 Preparation (Set Language)

Remarks

These exercises may give you an impression of the foundation needed in this course.

1. Let f : X → Y and g : Y → Z; A ⊂ X, B ⊂ Y ; if needed, f (A) ⊂ B. Determine the

correctness of the following statements. Justify with proofs or counter-examples.

(a) f (A1 ∩ A2 ) = f (A1 ) ∩ f (A2 )

(b) if B1 ⊂ B2 then f −1 (B1 ) ⊂ f −1 (B2 )
(c) if A1 ⊂ A2 then f (A2 ∗ A1 ) = f (A2 ) ∗ f (A1 ) where ∗ may be ∪, ∩, \ (set minus), or
△ (symmetric difference).

2. Define a relation ∼ on R2 by (x1 , y1 ) ∼ (x2 , y2 ) if x21 − y12 = x22 − y22 . Show that this is an
equivalence relation. What are its equivalence classes?

For an equivalence relation ∼ (not necessarily the above) on a set X, what is its quotient
map q defined on X?

Under what condition does a function f : W → X/∼ has another f˜ : W → X such that
f = q ◦ f˜?

3. Define a family of sets Xα for α ∈ A (index set) and the arbitrary product α∈A Xα .

If there are functions fα : Xα → Y , is it possible to define a function f : α∈A Xα → Y ?

On the other hands, if there are functions gα : U → Xα , is it possible to define a function

g: U → α∈A Xα ?
∪ ∩
4. Let Aα ⊂ X where α ∈ A. Define α∈A Aα and α∈A Aα .

For B ⊂ A, what is the meaning of { Aα : α ∈ B }? What is the meaning of all arbitrary
unions of sets in { Aα : α ∈ A }?
∪ ∪
Let C be a set of sets. What is the notation C? What is B where B ⊂ C?

5. What is a countable or uncountable set? State some propositions about countability

between a set and its image under a function.

6. What are the basic requirements of an algebraic group?

Give two examples of infinite group except Z and R. Also, give two examples of finite
non-abelian group.
