Problem Statement

This document presents a multi-part problem involving differential equations: (1) Find the general solution for y = f(x) where dy/dx = 1/(y^2+a^2)^n with a and n real numbers. (2) Using the general solution with a=1 and n=2, solve the initial value problem with y(1)=0. (3) Using the general solution with a=1 and n=3, find the general solution for y=f(x).

Problem statement

(a)Find the general solution for 𝑦 = ∅(𝑥) where dy/dx =1/(y2+a2) n such that a and n real.

(b)Using part (a), with a=1and n=2 solve the initial value problem with y (1) =0

(c)Using part (a), with a=1 and n=3, find the general solution for y=∅(𝑥)

Required work & solution

(a)
𝑑𝑦 1
= (𝑦 2 +𝑎2 )𝑛 Such that a & n are real
𝑑𝑥

∫(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 𝑑𝑦 = ∫ 𝑑𝑥 ……….. (1)

First, we find

𝑑
∫(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 . 1𝑑𝑦 = (𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 ∫ 𝑑𝑦 − ∫{ (𝑦 2 +𝑎2 )𝑛 𝑑𝑦
𝑑𝑦

= 𝑦(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 − ∫ 𝑛(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛−1 ∗ 2𝑦 ∗ 𝑦𝑑𝑦

= 𝑦(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 − 2𝑛 ∫ 𝑦 2 (𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛−1 𝑑𝑦

= 𝑦(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 − 2𝑛 ∫{(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 ) − 𝑎2 }(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛−1 𝑑𝑦

= 𝑦(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 − 2𝑛 ∫{(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 − 𝑎2 (𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛−1 }𝑑𝑦

= 𝑦(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 − 2𝑛 ∫(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 𝑑𝑦 + 2𝑛𝑎2 ∫(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛−1 𝑑𝑦

∫(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 𝑑𝑦 + 2𝑛 ∫(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 𝑑𝑦 = 𝑦(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 + 2𝑛𝑎2 ∫(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛−1 𝑑𝑦

2 2 )𝑛
𝑦(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 2𝑛𝑎2
∫(𝑦 + 𝑎 𝑑𝑦 = + ∫(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛−1 𝑑𝑦
2𝑛 + 1 2𝑛 + 1

Now put in equation (1),

𝑦(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛 2𝑛𝑎2
+ ∫(𝑦 2 + 𝑎2 )𝑛−1 𝑑𝑦 = 𝑥 + 𝑐
2𝑛 + 1 2𝑛 + 1

(b)

a=1

n=2

y (1) = 0

Put in equation (2),

𝑦(𝑦 2 + 1)2 4
+ ∫(𝑦2 + 1)𝑑𝑦 = 𝑥 + 𝐶
5 5
𝑦(𝑦 2 + 1)2 4 𝑦3
+ ( + 𝑦) = 𝑥 + 𝐶
5 5 3
Use y (1) =0, y=0, x=1
0=1+C
C = -1
Then solution is

𝑦(𝑦 2 + 1)2 4 𝑦3
+ ( + 𝑦) = 𝑥 − 1
5 5 3

(c)
a = 1, n = 3
Put in equation (2)
𝑦(𝑦 2 + 1)3 6
+ ∫(𝑦 2 + 1)2 𝑑𝑦 = 𝑥 + 𝐶 … … … … . (3)
7 7
2
𝑦(𝑦 2 +1) 4
∫(𝑦 2 + 1)2 . 1𝑑𝑦= 5
+ 5 ∫(𝑦 2 + 1)𝑑𝑦

By using eq.(x)

n = 2, a = L

𝑦(𝑦 2 +1)2 4 𝑦3
= + ( + 𝑦)
5 5 3

Using equation (3)

𝑦(𝑦 2 + 1)3 6 𝑦(𝑦 2 + 1)2 4 𝑦 3

+ { + ( + 𝑦)} = 𝑥 + 𝐶
7 7 5 5 3

General solution is

𝑦(𝑦 2 + 1)3 6 𝑦(𝑦 2 + 1)2 𝑦3

+ { + 4 ( + 𝑦)} = 𝑥 + 𝐶
7 35 1 3
