In the near future humanity is faced with a global energy crisis. Man has managed to
exhaust Earth’s natural resources and the RDA (Resources Development
Administration) sees a solution to this catastrophe in the form of unobtanium, an
energy-rich element that unfortunately does not exist on Earth. The only source of the
element is Pandora, a jungle planet orbiting a gas giant in the distant Alpha Centauri
galaxy. Mining unobtanium is a difficult and costly endeavor not only because of the
distance of Pandora from the Earth but also because the planet itself is dangerous to
humans: Pandora’s atmosphere is toxic to humans and the Na’vi, a race of intelligent,
three-meter tall, blue-hued humanoids, already inhabit it. Moreover, the Na’vi do not
take nicely to human mining operations being carried out on their planet and many have
taken to guerrilla warfare in an attempt to stop further attempts to strip mine their land.

Human scientists have managed to manufacture human-Na’vi hybrid clones that can be
operated by genetically compatible humans as a means to freely move around and
operate in Pandora’s poisonous atmosphere. Human operators have their
consciousness “uploaded” into these surrogate bodies. These proxy bodies are the
titular “avatars.” A paraplegic marine named Jake Sully is given a second chance at life
when he replaces his identical twin brother to committed suicide as an avatar operator.
He is shipped to Pandora to serve as a bodyguard for Dr. Grace Augustine, head of the
Avatar program and xenobiologist Dr. Norm Spellman as they study the native flora and
fauna of the planet.
A large alien animal attacks Jake while on duty protecting the two scientists; he runs
into the jungle to escape it and this is where a female Na’vi named Neytiri rescues him.
She takes Jake to her tribe, confident of doing so after having seen a providential omen.
Neytiri’s mother and spiritual leader Mo’at orders her to induct Jake into their clan. Upon
returning to HQ unharmed, Jake is promised by Col. Miles Quaritch, Security Head for
RDA that his ability to walk can be restored if he agrees to spy on the Na’vi and find the
location of a giant tree the natives call “Hometree.” Hometree is a sacred site for many
different Na’vi tribes and it is also the location of the largest vein of unobtanium.
Obtaining it would mean that they would all be able to return to Earth but that would also
mean leaving Pandora as desolate as Earth.
Upon discovering this Dr. Augustine moves her team to a remote station to better study
the native’s customs and hopefully, find a better solution for all involved. Jake soon finds
becomes supportive of their plight as he gains a better understanding of the locals. Jake
is eventually integrated into the tribe and Neytiri chooses him as a mate, his
commitment being fully turned over to the Na’vi. Jake sabotages a bulldozer that was
tasked to destroy a sacred site, an act that prompts the RDA to order to complete
destruction of Hometree. Dr. Augustine argues that the destruction of Hometree would
also affect all life on the planet so Parker Selfridge, RDA Head Administrator gives her
and Jake one hour to plead their case with the Na’vi to evacuate their homes.

Jake acknowledges that he had initially worked as a spy but his confession ends with
their capture and widespread confusion among the Na’vi, which Col. Quaritch is quick to
capitalize on. While reeling from the shock of betrayal he orders his men to destroy
Hometree, kill the clan chief and other tribal leaders, massacre the natives, and detach
Jake and his team from their avatars and imprison them. The cruelty of Col. Quaritch
sickens some of the human forces making them sympathetic to Jake’s plight,
particularly a young pilot named Trudy Chacón who helps Jake and Dr. Augustine
escape to their outpost so they can be uploaded into their avatars once more to help
rally the surviving Na’vi. Dr. Augustine is fatally injured during the escape though.
Having earned the Na’vi’s ire, Jake sets into motion a daring plan to connect his mind to
Toruk, an immense dragon-like creature both revered and feared by the Navi, in order to
redeem himself to the tribe. Jake’s gambit pays off and he is able to bind with Toruk,
earning the respect of the Na’vi once more. He manages to locate the rest survivors at
the Tree of Souls and begs Mo’at to heal Dr. Augustine. They attempt to “upload” her
consciousness into her avatar body with the aid of the Tree of Souls but her human
body dies before the process is completed.

Jake, supported by the new tribal chieftain Tsu’tey, gathers and unites the remaining
tribes to fight the RDA. Col. Quaritch mounts a pre-emptive strike however anticipating
the retaliation of the united tribes. He targets the Tree of Souls thinking that its
destruction will dishearten the Na’vi. Despite having successfully rallied the surviving
tribes, Jake is uncertain of their chances of victory and so before the final, decisive
battle Jake prays to Eywa, the patron goddess of the Na’vi, through a neural connection
to the Tree of Souls to help them.

The RDA’s superior technology and weaponry overwhelm the natives and the human
sympathizers but are saved when the native Pandoran fauna join in the fight turning the
tide of battle. Neytiri and the rest of the tribes take this to mean that Eywa has heard
Jake’s prayer and has responded by sending assistance.

Jake and Col. Quaritch face off and Jake manages to destroy the improvised bomber
craft before it can incinerate the Tree of Souls. Col. Quaritch escapes however and
severs the avatar link unit that houses Jake's human body, subjecting him to Pandoran
atmospheric toxins. Neytiri arrives just in time however to kills Quaritch and saves Jake.
All humans, save for Jake and a select few, are commanded to leave Pandora and
return to Earth. Jake is then permanently transferred into his avatar with the aid of the
Tree of Souls.

Jake Sully is a soldier who has lost the use of his legs. However, the unfortunate death
of his brother may have given him the opportunity to be cured. America has found a
valuable natural resource, an element called "unobtainium," on a faraway planet called
Pandora. This could solve the energy crisis on Earth; however, two problems are
presented by this mission. First, Pandora's atmosphere is poisonous to human beings.
Second, Pandora is inhabited by a peaceful alien race of tall blue creatures called the
Na'Vi, whose religious beliefs cause them to fiercely protect their world from destruction
by machine. Human scientists have found a way to transport the brain of a person into a
specially-crafted Na'Vi body called an avatar. This enables the human to essentially
become a Na'Vi, to walk around freely on Pandora's surface without being poisoned,
and to help in peacekeeping missions with the natives by giving them common ground.
The scientists, led by Grace, are committed to keeping conflict at bay, but the military,
led by Colonel Miles Quaritch, sees the Na'Vi as vicious savages who hate our human
way of life. Sully is invited to take part in the Avatar program because his brother was
part of it before his death, and Sully's genetic material makes him the most suitable
match to take over his brother's avatar. Colonel Quaritch encourages Sully to spy on the
scientists and the Na'Vi, and to report back daily with any information that may be
useful. If Sully does this, Colonel Quaritch promises him the technology to be able to
walk again on human legs.

"Avatar," a live action film with a new generation of special effects, takes us to a
spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of
redemption and discovery as he leads an epic battle to save a civilization. James
Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of "Titanic," first conceived the film years ago,
when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual
production work, "Avatar" delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind,
where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the
emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
The story's hero is Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. Bitter and
disillusioned, he's still a warrior at heart. All Jake ever wanted was something worth
fighting for, and he finds it in the place he least expected: on a distant world. Jake has
been recruited to join an expedition to the moon Pandora, which corporate interests are
strip-mining for a mineral worth $20 billion per kilogram on Earth. To facilitate their work,
the humans use a link system that projects a person's consciousness into a hybrid of
humans and Pandora's indigenous humanoids, the Na'vi. This human-Na'vi hybrid – a
fully living, breathing body that resembles the Na'vi but possesses the individual
human's thoughts, feelings and personality – is known as an "avatar."
In his new avatar form, Jake can once again walk. His mission is to interact with and
infiltrate the Na'vi with the hope of enlisting their help – or at least their acquiescence –
in mining the ore. A beautiful Na'vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake's life, albeit reluctantly,
because even in his avatar body, Jake represents to her the human encroachment on
the Na'vi's unspoiled world.
As Jake's relationship with Neytiri deepens, along with his respect for the Na'vi, he
faces the ultimate test as he leads an epic conflict that will decide nothing less than the
fate of an entire world.
