SECTION IV: WRITING (60 pts)

Sample for summary:
The extract discusses controversies relating the existence of water on Mars. Two types of water features
appearing on photos, namely runoff and outflow channels, suggests Mars used to enjoy a large amount of
water. Unlike runoff systems which are grand and similar to river networks on Earth, outflow ones seem to
be the routes created by a disastrous flood with water running from highlands to plains at an incredible
speed. Based on the image of supposed delta and the computer-generated view of purported ancient sea,
scientists assume Mars was greatly covered with water for a while; however, this is still debatable. Despite
some advocacy, opponents assert that the terraced ‘beaches’ shown in data gathered can result from
geological activities and that Mars lacks the feature found mainly in ancient oceans.
