Musculoskeletal ICD-10-CM Coding Tip Sheet

Overview of Key Chapter 13 Updates

Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue (M00-M99)

Key Updates to the Musculoskeletal System Chapter Include:

 Most of the codes within chapter 13 have site and laterality designations. For some
conditions where more than one bone, joint or muscle is usually involved, such as
osteoarthritis, there is a “multiple sites” code available.
 Many musculoskeletal conditions are a result of previous injury or trauma to a site, or are
recurrent conditions. Bone, joint or muscle conditions that are the result of a healed injury
are usually found in chapter 13

Examples of Musculoskeletal Combination Codes

 M32.11 – Endocarditis in systemic lupus erythematosus
 M79.601 – Pain in right arm
 M79.602 – Pain in left arm
 Note: Wherever there are codes for laterality, there is always a code for unspecified –
M79.603 – Pain in arm, unspecified
