Problem Set-4: Solidification Time: Mould (B) (A) Mould Metal

1. The ratio of solidification times for a sphere made of material A and cylinder made of material B will be 3:1, since the density of material A is 3 times that of material B and all other properties are equal. 2. Using a metal mold instead of a sand mold will decrease solidification times due to higher heat conductivity of metal. 3. A spherical riser shape is most suitable because it has the smallest surface area to volume ratio, allowing solidification to occur more slowly and uniformly.

Problem set-4: Solidification time

1. A cylinder and a sphere of are to be cast in a sand mold. What will be the ratio of the
solidification time, if the sphere is made of material A and the cylinder is made of
material B, where density of A=3 times density of B. All other physical properties and
pouring temperature of the melt can be considered to be equal? (Take appropriate
physical properties)

2. A thin sheet is to be cast. What will be the ratio of solidification times if a metal mold is
used instead of a sand mold?

3. Among the following geometries which is the most suitable riser shape? Why?
(i) Cube (iI) Cylinder (iii) Sphere

4. Chvorinov’s relation for the solidification time was derived for on insulated mold with a
plane mold-metal interface. Will the rule be valid for the following cases.

5. Explain when can a pure solidifying sphere develop surface irregularities? For an alloy,
when the liquid melt is at higher temperature than the melting/liquidus point, briefly
explain constitutional supercooling condition.

6. Consider a thin plate with a square cross-section. Heat is being removed from four sides.
Draw and explain the microstructure in the cross-section on the completion of
solidification. Assume solid and liquid have the same density.
