Digital Assignment 1

This document contains 4 fluid mechanics assignment problems: 1) calculating the magnitude and location of water force on a vertical pool end, 2) calculating horizontal and vertical hydrostatic forces on a quarter-circle dam, 3) calculating hydrostatic force and its line of action on a pivoting circular-arc gate, and 4) calculating the magnitude of fluid force on one end of a closed storage tank containing ethyl alcohol.

MEE1004- Fluid Mechanics

Assignment-1
1. A swimming pool is 18m long and 7m wide. Determine the magnitude and
the location of the resultant force of the water on the vertical end of the
pool where the depth is 2.5m.
2. The dam in Figure is a quarter-circle 50 m wide into the paper. Determine
the horizontal and vertical components of hydrostatic force against the
dam and the point CP where the resultant strikes the dam.

3. Circular-arc Tainter gate ABC pivots about point O. For the position
shown, determine (a) the hydrostatic force on the gate (per meter of width
into the paper); and (b) its line of action. Does the force pass through
point O?

4. The vertical cross section of a 7m long closed storage tank is shown below.
The tank contains ethyl alcohol and air pressure of 40 kpa. Determine the
magnitude of the resultant fluid force acting on one end of the tank. Specific
weight of ethyl is 7.74 N/m3
