1.relations and Functions - Self Evaluation

1. The document contains a mathematics self-evaluation test with 15 multiple-choice questions covering relations and functions. The questions are divided into four sections with varying point values. 2. Section I contains 4 very short answer questions worth 1 mark each about properties of functions like range and inverse functions. Section II has 3 short answer questions worth 2 marks each testing properties like reflexivity and defining domains and ranges. 3. Section III consists of 5 long answer questions worth 4 marks testing combining functions, proving equivalence relations, and determining if functions are one-to-one and onto. Section IV has 3 long answer questions worth 6 marks involving more advanced topics like equivalence relations and inverses of functions.

Self Evaluation- Relations and Functions

Time: 45 Mins Max. Marks: 50
I. Very Short Answer type Questions (1Mark)
|2𝑥−3|
1. What is the range of the function 2𝑥−3 ?
2. If the function f: R→R, defined by f(x)=3x-4 is invertible then find the inverse.
3. Check whether the relation R in the set A={1,2,3} given by R={(1,2), (2,1)} is
transitive, justify.
4. Let R be the equivalence relation in the set A={0, 1, 2, 3, 4} given by R={(a, b): 2
divides (a-b)}. Write the equivalence class of [0].
II. Short Answer type Questions (2 Marks)
5. Check whether the relation R defined in the set A={1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} as R={(a,b): b=a+1,
a,b є A} is reflexive, symmetric or transitive.
6. If f: R→R be the functions defined by f(x) =4x3+7, show that f is a bijection.
7. If R={(x, y): x+2y=8} is a relation on N. Write the domain and range of R.
III. Long Answer type Questions-I (4 Marks)
8. Let f, g: R→R be two functions defined as f(x) =|x|+x and g(x) =|x|- x for all x є R.
then find fog(x) and gof(x).
9. Let A ={1, 2, 3, …, 9} and R be the relation in A x A defined by (a, b)R(c, d)⇒
a+d=b+c. Prove that R is an equivalence relation. Also obtain the equivalence class
of [(2, 5)].

11. Consider f: R+ → [-9,∞] given by f(x)=5x2+6x-9. Prove that f is invertible.
IV. Long Answer type Questions-II (6 Marks)
12. Let N denote the set of all natural numbers and R be the relation on N x N defined
by (a,b) R (c, d) if ad(b+c)=bc(a+d). Show that R is equivalence relation.

13. Show that the function f: R→{xєR:-1<x<1} defined by 𝑓(𝑥) = 1+|𝑥| is one-one and
onto function. Hence find f inverse.
14. Let f: N→R be a function defined as f(x)=4x2+12x+15. Show that f:N→S where S is
range of f, is invertible. Also find the inverse.
15. Show that the relation R in the set A={1, 2, 3, 4, 5} given by R={(a,b):|a-b| is divisible
by 2} is an equivalence relation. Write all the equivalence classes of R.
