Gears and belts are both mechanisms that transmit rotational motion from one shaft to another. Gears make direct contact through interlocking teeth, allowing them to efficiently transfer motion between parallel or perpendicular shafts. Belts transmit motion over distance between parallel shafts using a looped strip over pulleys. While gears can handle high power loads and precisely coordinate motion, belts offer a simpler and cheaper solution when shafts are farther apart or power levels are lower. The choice depends on factors like power needs, shaft geometry, efficiency requirements, and cost.

Gear

-A mechanism that performs a specific function in a complete machine steering gear. A

level or pace of functioning kicked their performance into high gear, one of two or more
adjustments of a transmission (as of a bicycle or motor vehicle) that determine
mechanical advantage, relative speed, and direction of travel.
Gear system
A car’s transmission system carries the power from the engine to the wheels. It is made
up of gearbox (and normally a clutch) and driveshafts. The faster the engine turns, the
more power it produces Gear allow the engine to turn quickly whether the car is just
starting off o speeding along.

Two gears the same size spin at the same

speed. But if one gear is twice as big as
the other, the small gear will spin as
twice as fast

Types of gears
Gear mechanism are used to transfer power, normally from one spinning shaft to
another. They can change the speed and direction of the rotation. Spur gears are used
when the shaft are parallel to each other. Bevel gear connect shafts at right angles.
Rack and pinions gears connect a shaft with astraight surface that moves from side to
side.

Belt Technology
One of the most common devices, belt drives are used to transmit motion from one
shaft to another with the help of a thin inextensible band that runs over two pulleys. It is
basically a looped strip of flexible material that mechanically link the rotating shafts.
There are various kind of belt drives available in the market such as flat belt, V-belt,
rope drive, and timing belt. It is important to select the right kind of belt drive,
depending upon:
Power to be transmitted
Direction of belt motion
Shaft’s velocity and Velocity ratio
Service conditions
Distance between shafts, and space available
Irrespective of the type of belt drive you are using, this technology offers a smooth and
effective transmission of power between shafts even if they are at a considerable
distance. This technology is used when you need to transmit rotary motion between two
parallel shafts. They are the cheapest method of power transmission.
The advantages of a belt drive include:
Belt drives are cost-effective. New belt When the distance between shafts is
drive efficiency can be up to 95-98 very large, belt drives are the most
percent economical options
They are simple to use Damp out noise and vibration
Belt drives do not require parallel shaft Load fluctuations are shock-absorbed,
increasing the machinery life
They have a low maintenance cost
Clutch action can be activated by

Different speeds can be obtained by

However, belt technology also comes with certain disadvantages. These are:

Gears
It performs a fuction that mechanise a machine. Gears helps the machine to
operately perform its role in a machine. It supports the device to work effectively and
efficiently that also to control the speed and direction of the mechanism.
Based on Young Learner’s, How Science Works, (n.d.) as the information given:
the wheels that came from the engine was powered by the trnsmission system which is
the gearbox and driveshafts. If the machine goes faster than normal the more power it
creates. When the device is starting and goes faster it allows the engine to turn to work.
If the gears with the same range, they have an equal speed of rotation, if the other one
is bigger it revolves twice as fast. (page 44)
Also, types of gears, gears are to convert power from one shaft to other and alter
the direction and speed. Spur gears are parallel to each other to rotate. Bevel gears are
right angled connecting shaft. Rack or pinion gears, it is a connecting shaft moving from
side to side. (page 45)

Belt technology
Belt is an inextensible band that can rotate over two pulleys. It helps to convey the
flow from the shaft to another and it also linked the shaft from a looped strip that mechanise
the device. There are different types of belt such as flat belt, V-belt, rope drive and timing
belt depends on the power to be transmitted, direction of shifts, shaft’s velocity and ratio,
condition of the machine and the distance between the shaft and space. The advatages of
using the belt is 95-98 percent of effiency and also does not require a parallel shaft. They
come with overload and jam protection, different speeds can be obtained forstep or
tapered pulleys. The distance between shafts is very large, load fluctuations are shock-
absorbed for the belt to last longer. Clutch action can be activated by releasing belt
tension.
Belts have some disadvantages. Belt drives are not compact, and also the limited
speed is around 35 meters per second. They have a short life service, it is restricted to
–35 to 85°C . Angular velocity of the belt drives is not stable. Sometimes, it stretches,
slips, and wears of belt. The power transmission can be 370 kW and result to heating
up. Belts are not usually for heavy loaded object. It is commonly slip and also needs an
idler and adjustments, because velocity varies.
Gears and Belts
Gears are usually housed inside a casing of some kind, while belts can be more
open to the atmosphere. If you consider a gearbox on a motorcycle, there are multiple
shafts and sliding gears all occupying a fairly small area, they can also handle large
amounts of power,(in excess of 200bhp), this would not be possible if it was done by a
belt system. (Bobby Irvine, worked at Knott Mill Kawasaki Answered Dec 23, 2016)

Both gears and belts transmit rotational motion from one rotating shaft to another.
However, there are major differences in their use and motion transmitting efficiency.
Gears are often used to transmit motion between two shafts which are close to each
other, the shafts can be parallel or even be perpendicular. Whereas, belts are often
used to transmit motion when the shafts are parallel and placed distantly from each
other. Talking about the motion transfer efficiency, Gears have interlocking teeth on its
periphery which makes it 96-98% efficient. Belts can incur slip loss if its not taut
properly, which makes it less efficient. However, gears are costly and belts are cheaper.
(Himanshu Joshi (India),Answered Jul 10, 2014)

Usually gears are round and the reason for them is if you use a large gear to run a
smaller gear it greatly speeds up the smaller one. Belts purpose is usually used to run
pulleys like you car runs several things at once like your water pump, air conditioner,
alternator ECT. Gears usually run against each other while pulleys use a belt to connect
to each other. (Glenn Shannon, works at Retirement Answered Dec 22, 2016)

Gears never slip once engaged. They can be used to build things, like clocks, that
require motion to be coordinated.Belts always slip a little bit, and can not be used in
such a manner. (Mike Warot, Machinist (2014-present) Answered Feb 4, 2018)

Gears have cogs and do the pulling themselves. Belts have to be put on a pulley
before they can pull. (Dean Bonczynski, worked at Farming (Nebraska) Answered Dec
22, 2016)
