What is a Material?

All Matter in the Universe!!!

What are Engineering Materials?
Engineers make things and they make them out of Materials !!!
• Everything in this world is made up of ~125 elements
• In ‘pure’ form elements are not useful materials (except Gold and
few others)
• In combined form of elements originate many materials
Classification of Materials
All Matter in the Universe
can be classified as:

1. Organic Materials
2. Inorganic Materials

What classification do we
use as engineers?
Advanced Materials
Classification of Engineering Materials Semiconductors
Biomaterials
Smart Materials
Nanomaterials

Metals Ceramics Polymers

Strong Hard Lightweight
Ductile Brittle Tough
Conduct electricity and heat insulators viscoelastic
Shiny if polished

Composites

What is Material Science and Engineering?
• Material Science is the investigation of the relationship among
structure, processing, properties and performance of materials.
Subatomic (electrons in an individual atom &
how they interact in nuclei)
Atomic / Crystal/ Molecular
Microscopic (Grain Structure, Phases, Defects)
Macroscopic (elements that can be viewed by
naked eye)

Mechancial
Electronical

Magnetic
Temperature Optical
Pressure/Stress Chemical (Deteriorative)

What is Materials Science and Engineering?
• There are many allotropes of carbon and each exhibits unique
properties. Diamond Coal
Graphite

C60
Buckminsterfullerene
Nanotube Graphene
(Soccerball)
How do you relate Materials Science to your own
disipline?
• Material Science is the investigation of the relationship among
structure, processing, properties and performance of materials.
 Buying/ using the right material?
 Does your process affect the
properties?
 Do your service conditions affect
the performance?
(corrosion, fatique)
 Testing the properties of
materials

Material Selection: Which one is better?
Requirements:

1. Provide a barrier to the passage of CO2, which

is under pressure in container
2. Be nontoxic, unreactive with beverage, and,
preferably recyclable
3. Be relatively strong and capable of surviving a
drop from height of several meters when
containing a beverage
4. Be inexpensive, including the cost to fabricate
final shape
5. If optically transparent, retain its optical clarity
6. Be capable of being produced in different colors Metal Ceramic Polymer
and/or adorned with decorative labels Aluminum Glass Polyester plastic
Summary
• Material science and engineering mainly focusses on solid phase.
• Material Science is the investigation of the relationship among structure,
processing, properties and performance of materials.

• The length scale of interest for material structure ranges from atomistic- to
micro- and macro-structures.
• The materials are classified in 4 groups as metals, ceramics, polymers and
composites mainly based on bond type. They all have distinctive properties. 13
