Questions:
Sr. Question SET 1 CO Number
No.
1. A rod of 10 mm square section and 160mm length with thermal CO1
conductivity of 50 W/m°C protrudes from a furnace wall at 200 C CO2
and is exposed to air at 30 C with convection coefficient 20
W/m2C. Make calculation for the heat conducted up to 80mm and
158mm lengths and comment on the result. Adapt a long fin model
for the arrangement.
3. A cast iron central heating pipe has an inner diameter of 100 CO1
mm and wall thickness of 5 mm. The pipe feeds a radiator CO2
with water at a temperature of 90°C and inner wall
temperature of the pipe may be assumed equal to the water
temperature. Calculate the outer surface temperature of the
pipe and heat transfer rate per metre length of pipe in a
room at 20°C.
Take k (pipe material) = 52 W/m°C and ho= 20 W/m2°C
2. The temperature at the inner and outer surfaces of a boiler wall CO1
made of 15 mm thick steel and covered with an insulating material CO2
of 5 mm thickness are 2500 C and 250 C respectively. If the
thermal conductivities of steel and insulating material are 58W/moC
and 0.116 W/moC respectively, determine the rate of flow through
the boiler wall
3. Explain the different modes of heat transfer with appropriate CO1
expressions CO2
2. What is the physical significance of the Fourier number? Will the CO1
Fourier number of specific transient heat transfer problem double if CO2
the time is doubled?
3. The temperature at the inner and outer surfaces of a boiler wall CO1
made of 20 mm thick steel and covered with an insulating material CO2
of 5 mm thickness are 3000 C and 500 C respectively. If the
thermal conductivities of steel and insulating material are 58W/moC
and 0.116 W/moC respectively, determine the rate of flow through
the boiler wall
