Description

Storage devices are computing hardware that store information permanently or

temporarily. Computers use two types of storage devices: primary storage device such as RAM,
and a second storage device such as a hard drive. Hard disk drives are non-volatile memory
hardware and can be externally or internally. The information is being stored and retrieved on a
computer permanently. The operating system, applications, media, and other files are stored in the
hard disk drive. It is classified as a secondary storage device and composed of several platters
wherein data is written using a magnetic head at high revolutions, all components are in an air-
sealed casing. An internal hard disk is found in a drive bay connected to the motherboard using
ATA, SCSI, or SATA cable; it is powered by the connection to the PSU (power supply unit).
Popular manufacturers of a hard disk drive are Seagate, Western, Digital, Hitachi, and Toshiba.

The average size of a hard disk is the size of a paperback book but heavier. Pre-drilled
threaded holes are seen on the sides of the hard disk drive for mounting in the 8.89 cm. drive bay
in the computer’s case. An adapter can be used in mounting into a larger 13.34 cm. drive bay. The
mounted hard disk drive’s end with connections faced inside the computer’s case. The end of the
hard disk drive containing the port for a cable such as SATA or PATA depending on the type of
drive connects to the motherboard; the connection of the drive to the power supply also presented.

The hard disk drive presented on this working drawing was a 6.35 cm. hard disk drive
suitable for laptops. The hard disk drive dimensions are 6.86 cm. wide, 0.94 cm. high, and 10.06
cm. long; it weighs 98.94 grams. The platter’s diameter was 6.35 cm. The other components of the
hard disk drive are spindle motor, heads, sliders, arms, actuator, and logic board. The hard disk
drive was connected using a SATA cable.
Functions

The operating system such as Windows, Linux, or Macintosh allows the communication
between the different computer hardware with respect to the demand of the task or the application
running. Computers have two storage devices use for temporarily or permanently storing data. The
hard disk drive stores data permanently. The capacity of the hard disk drive pertains the amount
of information can be stored. It is measured in megabytes (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes), gigabytes (1
GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), or terabytes (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). The main function of
the hard disk drive is the installation of the operating system; other files such as text, videos,
audios, etc. can be stored. This function is internal hard disk drives. External hard disk drives are
being used as a backup storage and for transferring files between two locations. These external
hard disk drives provide portability to mobilize terabytes of data rather transporting a laptop.

Warnings

Warning Signs of Hard Disk Drive Failure:

 Frequent but irregular crashes, especially while booting up Windows®

 Frequent and cryptic error messages while performing typical activities like moving files

 Folder and file names that have been scrambled and changed

 Disappearing files and folders

 Really long wait times to access folders and files

 Hard disk is silent for a long period after you request data by opening a file or folder

 Garbled output from open files or printing

 Hard drive grinds away constantly because of noisy bearings

Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T) is an application to

monitor a hard disk drive. The application is integrated in the hard disk drive and predicting disk
failure. The attributes and parameters it used evaluates the hard disk drive’s permanent health
status. It provides information regarding current temperature of the hard disk drive, total number
of hours, read errors, issues, and health status.
