crops and generated technologies, important of which are listed hereimder.
AGRICULTURE
Improved crop varieties: Since the inception of the University 302 varieties of different crops
were released. Some of the ANGRAU varieties are popular in 14 other states and 4 other
countries. Some of the varieties which were the first of the kind in the country are fimiished
below.
8
> In rice hybrids (APHR-1 and APHR-2), gall-midge resistant variety (Kakatiya)
and brown plant hopper resistant variety (Vajram)
> Triple cross hybrid (Trishulata) in maize
> Powdery mildew resistant variety (Krishnaiah- LBG 17) in blackgram
> Nematode resistant variety (Tirupati-3) in groundnut
> First authentic hybrid (APSH-11) in Sunflower
> Redrot resistant variety (Co A 7601) in sugarcane
> Whitefly resistant (LPS 141) and whitefly immune (LK 561) varieties in cotton
> Early hybrid (Godavari Ganga) in coconut
Technologies generated
> Rice fallow pulses technology developed by the University Scientists has
replaced rice in 4 lacks hectares in coastal districts of A.P. and revolutionised
black gram production
> Kranthi variety is revolutionising castor yield in rainfed areas
> Subsurface drainage technology suitable for ill drained soils increased yields by
25,36 and 38 per cent in rice, sugarcane and betelvine respectively.
> Improved doruvu (shallow dug out) technology skimming fresh water from
saline subsurface water and saving 35,000 ha of land used traditionally for
excavating doruvus to irrigate nurseries in south-eastern coastal areas of the state.
> Developed root feeding technique for coconut, which is being extensively used
by the coconut growers for controlling major pests viz., black head caterpillar,
red-palm weevil etc.,
> Successful introduction of non-traditional crops like mustard, svmflower,
soybean and oilpalm in different regions of the state.
> Developed 8 row power tiller operated paddy transplanter
LIVESTOCK
> Improvement of the internationally famous Ongole breed of cattle through
selective breeding.
> Evolution of sheep synthetics (Dorset x Nellore/Sufflok x Nellore) which can be
conamercially exploited under intensive sheep management system.
> Successful Embryo transfer technology in Cattle
> Developed crossbred pigs through mating of Yorkshire with native pigs.
> Developed ILR Jubilee-90, a high yielding and feed efficient strain of Poultry.
> Developed diagnostic kits-ELISA technique for early detection of animal
diseases viz., E.D.S., R.D., I.B.D. etc.
> Standardized pelleting and expander-extruder technology for production of
complete livestock feeds based on agricultural crop residues.
FISHERIES
> Developed cultural practices for brackish water and fresh water aquaculture.
> Identified profitable farming systems vi., rice-cum fish culture, fish-banana-
coconut culture and rice-banana fish culture.
> Successful introduction of alternative species i.e, mud crab, Scylla
tranquovarica in brackish water ponds.
HOME SCIENCE
> Standardized oyster mushroom production .
> Developed value added products like cheese, toffee, candy etc from Papaya
> Developed a psycho-motor stimulation kit and a manual for pre-school
children on thematic approach for optimum growth.

level extension functionaries in on-farm and off-farm activities at 280 mandals twice a
year
> Organised Karshaka Vigyan Vedikas in all 22 districts covering thousands of fanners in
each district.
> Kisan Melas consisting of Rythu Sadassu, exhibition and field demonstration were
organised in cooperation with line departments of government benefitting more than 1.5
lakh farm families.
> Vyavasaya Panchangam (Agricultural Almanac), a compendium of all technical
information related to agriculture, animal husbandry and home science is being
published annually coinciding with the Telugu New Year day.
