SDOF Model: Non-Periodic Excitation MDOF Models

This document contains 6 assignments on soil dynamics and vibration analysis: 1) Determine the response of a mass-spring system subjected to a rectangular pulse. 2) Analyze the response of a single-degree-of-freedom frame structure using earthquake acceleration data. 3) Derive and plot the response of an undamped mass-spring system subjected to a two-ramp loading function. 4) Analyze the vibration frequencies and mode shapes of a three-story shear frame structure. 5) Determine the natural frequencies and displacements of a forging hammer system under impact loading. 6) Determine the required stiffness of an auxiliary spring-mass system to absorb vibrations in a main system.

Assignment # 4
SDOF model: Non-periodic Excitation; MDOF Models
(1) Determine the response of a mass-spring system subjected to a rectangular pulse. Take m= 1 kg, ωn =
4 rad/s, po = 1 N and tp= 1s. Plot the maximum response ratio as a function of tp/Tn.

(2) A SDOF frame structure has a period of 0.8s, and a damping factor of 2%. The mass is m=1460 kg
(a) Using the average velocity spectrum for El Centro earthquake given in Fig. 1, determine the value
of the spectral velocity Sv that applies to the structure and the corresponding values of Su and Sd.
Also determine the maximum displacement of the mass and the maximum spring force.

(3) Derive the solution of the equation of motion for an undamped SDOF system, with stiffness k
and mass, subjected to the loading function shown in Fig. 2. For t< tr, u(t) is the solution of
equation of motion for the first ramp function. For t> tr, u(t) is the sum of response of the two
ramp functions. Assuming m= 30 kg, k=1500N/m, and po=2500 N, tr=0.5s, plot the response for
t=0 to 3s using any computer program.

(4) Analyze the vibration frequencies and mode shapes for the three-story shear frame shown in
Fig.3, The floor weights and story stiffness are to be taken as in the figure where w =4455 kN and
k=571475 kN/m.

(5) The weights of the tup, frame, anvil (along with workpiece), and the foundation block
in a forging hammer (Fig. 4) are 22.7 kN, 182.4 kN, 273kN and 638.4kN respectively. The
stiffness of the elastic pad placed between anvil block (steel block) and the concrete
foundation block is 7x 105 kN/m. The stiffness of the isolation placed underneath the
foundation (including the elasticity of the soil) is 3x 105 kN/m. If the velocity of the anvil
block after tup strikes on it is 0.32 m/sec, find the natural frequencies of the system, and
amplitude of displacements of the anvil and foundation block. Neglect the damping in the
system. (Hint: m1= mass of the foundation block, m2 = mass of the anvil block + mass of the
frame, initial displacement = 0, initial velocity = 0.32 s)

(6) A spring-mass system consists of a spring k1 and a mass m1, are attached as shown in
Fig.5 An auxiliary spring k2 and mass m2 are attached as shown in the figure. What should
the value k2 so that it acts as a vibration absorber for the main system (k1 and m1)?
(Assume Q= 100 N and ω = 32 rad/sec)
