2. A plate having an area of 0.4 m2 is sliding down the inclined plane at 30 to the
horizontal with a velocity of 0.25 m/s. There is a cushion of fluid 2 mm thick between
the plane and the plate. The weight of the plate is 25 N. Assuming linear velocity
profile in the film, find the viscosity of the fluid.
3. The space between two large flat and parallel walls 25 mm apart is filled with a liquid
of absolute viscosity 0.7 N-s/m2. Within this space a thin flat plate 25 cm 25 cm is
towed at a velocity of 0.15 m/s at a distance of 6 mm from one wall, the plate and its
movement being parallel to the walls. Assuming linear variations of velocity between
the plate and the walls, determine the force exerted by the liquid on the plate.
4. A 150 mm diameter shaft rotates at 1500 rpm in a 200 mm long journal bearing with
150.5 mm internal diameter. The uniform annular space between the shaft and the
bearing is filled with oil of dynamic viscosity 0.08 N-s/m2. Calculate the power
dissipated as heat.
5. A large plate moves with speed v0 over a stationary plate on a layer of oil. If the
velocity profile is that of a parabola as shown in Fig. 1 with oil at the plates having
the velocity as the plates, what is the shear stress on the moving plate from the oil?

6. A thin plate is placed between two flat surfaces h apart such that the viscosity of
liquids on the top and bottom of the plate are 1 and 2 respectively. Determine the
position of the plate such that the viscous resistance to uniform motion of the plate is
minimum.
7. A concentric-cylinder viscometer is used to measure the viscosity of a liquid. The
inner cylinder having radius R1 rotates at an angular velocity of ω inside fixed outer
cylinder of radius R2. Both the cylinders are of length L. Determine the viscosity of
the liquid which fills the space between the cylinders if a torque of T is required to
maintain the angular velocity.
8. A circular disc of radius R is kept at a small height h above a fixed bed by means of a
layer of oil of dynamic viscosity . If the disc is rotated at an angular velocity, ,
obtain an expression for the viscous torque on the disc. Assume linear variation of
velocity within the oil film.
9. Viscous torque in a concentric-cylinder viscometer as shown in Fig.2 is produced by
the annular gap around the inner cylinder as well as by the flat bottom of the inner
cylinder as it rotates above the flat bottom of the stationary outer cylinder. Obtain an
expression for the viscous torque.

10. Consider the incompressible laminar viscous flow over a semi-infinite flat plate
shown in Fig.3. Sketch the variation in shear stress, τ yx, as a function of y at the
locations x1 and x2. Also sketch the variation in shear stress along the plate surface (y
= 0) as a function of x.

11. What is the pressure within a 1 mm diameter spherical droplet of water relative to the
atmospheric pressure outside? Assume for pure water to be 0.073 N/m.
12. One clean glass tube of 3 mm diameter is immersed vertically in a bath of water.
How far does the water rise due to capillary action? Take the surface tension of
water in contact with air as 0.073 N/m and the area wetting contact angle as 0 .
