generation of a project fast and easy and reduce error-prone-
ness considerably. As a software for most complex HMI tasks,
WinCC is able to handle comprehensive projects and mass
data.
Scalability
The basic system is scalable in all respects by employing
WinCC options. The basic software can already be adapted to
increasing quantity structures by finely graded licenses.
Yet, a chosen license can easily be upgraded in regard to the
number of process tags. By employing WinCC/Server, you can
run WinCC as a client/server application. WinCC/Redundancy
is used to build up a highly available SCADA system.

Description
Balancing supply and load is a challenge in a market with
a growing energy demand and multiple decentralized energy
resources. Even the most advanced management systems
require numerous field devices to monitor and control the pro-
cess level. Those devices usually have to be compact and cost-
efficient and have to provide a secure communication interface
even in remote locations. SICAM SGU 7XV5676 has such a
secure and cellular communication build to connect with an
energy management system. It can be used for smart grid
purposes as various as demand response, DER controller for
virtual power plants, renewable integration in microgrids, or
small RTU (EEG-Box only for German version).

Description
Description
Smart Grid is a consistently intelligent power supply system
that ensures a reliable and efficient power distribution in order
to meet the constantly increasing requirements imposed on
our power supply. The AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure)
systems make a major contribution to the implementation of
this task. The individual system components – from the smart
meter and data concentrator to the central IT – provide power
consumption data of the connected customers as well as infor-
mation necessary for the network control so that the optimal
power supply is ensured.
Applications
The data concentrator is one of the most important compo-
nents within the AMI system and plays a key role in this con-
text. The following two complementary applications can be Figure 7.2/2 SICAM SGU

1) Communication gateway for data from smart meters

Smart Grids. The SICAM DC is the first data concentrator with display and
function keys for local operation offered by SIEMENS. Apart
from the display, the integrated web server also simplifies
handling. As a result, the fast and easy interaction with the
device is possible without additional tools.

SICAM I/O-Unit with 6 binary In-/Outputs
Description/Function/Features
Description
SICAM I/O-Unit 7XV5673 is a binary input/output device and
is designed for substations and increased industrial environ-
ment requirements. The SICAM I/O-Unit allows the transmis-
sion of binary inputs to binary outputs locally or via long
distances. It can be used for protection applications, e.g.
overcurrent protection, signal comparison, teleprotection
or as I/O expansion in substation automation systems.
Function
Via binary inputs, all kinds of binary signals of switchgear/
protection scheme (for example tripping commands, switch
position signal, fault and status indications) are securely
detected. This information can directly be distributed at this
SICAM I/O-Unit via contacts, or be transmitted via communica-
tion links to further SICAM I/O-Units or to automation systems. Figure 8.1/1 7XV5673 I/O-Unit – binary I/O mirror, binary I/O expansion,

I/O mirror function
When using the SICAM I/O-Units as I/O mirror according to
figure 8.1/2, the devices transmit the binary signals bi-
directionally. The transmission takes place between the two
devices over serial links (option) or over Ethernet networks.
Signal inputs and outputs can be assigned by the user. Figure 8.1/3 I/O mirror, uni-directional transmission from one to multiple
