Social Impact: Planning for Success

Description
How can we serve our beneficiaries effectively, sustainably, and at scale? In this course, Shashi
Buluswar, CEO of the Institute for Transformative Technologies, explains his nine-part
framework for creating social impact. You will use his framework to assess your organization’s
current level of success, identify upcoming risks, and make plans to achieve maximum impact.
You will also meet a variety of innovative leaders from across the social impact space and learn
how they have achieved such stellar success.

Curriculum

Module 1: Introduction to the Nine Part Framework & Lift


Recommended Schedule: Complete by Week 1
Description: This module introduces you to Shashi Buluswar’s nine-part framework for
success. You will hear about all nine aspects of organizational success but will focus
particular attention on the idea of creating “lift.”

Assignment: Mission Statement

Module 2: Reach and Efficiency


Recommended Schedule: Complete by Week 2
Description: This module explores two essential measures of success: reach – how
many beneficiaries you help – and efficiency – how well you transform resources into
impact.

Assignment: Cost Per Beneficiary


Module 3: Sustainability, Probability of Success, & Unintended Consequences
Recommended Schedule: Complete by Week 3
Description: This module investigates the question: what should your organization be
looking out for? You will consider the sustainability of your organization’s impact, risks
that might interfere with results, and the possibility of creating negative unintended
consequences.

Assignment: Probability of Success

Module 4: Scalability, Replicability, & Catalytic effect


Recommended Schedule: Complete by Week 4
Description: What is next for your organization? The final module of this course
explores different strategies that organizations have taken to dramatically increase the
impact of their work.

Course Instructor
Shashi Buluswar, CEO of the Institute for Transformative Technology
Shashi Buluswar is the co-founder and CEO of the Institute for Transformative Technologies.
Before founding ITT, Shashi was a Partner at Dalberg Global Development Advisors, an
organization which gives strategic advice to governments, the UN, NGOs, and foundations on
social issues.
In recent years, Shashi has worked with the UN's Peacekeeping Department to restructure
global operations, with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to launch large-scale agricultural
development programs in Africa and Asia, and dozens of NGOs fighting for human rights,
health, education, and economic empowerment.

Certification
The University is a non-degree, diploma or credit granting initiative. Philanthropy U, Inc. is the
concept developer and sponsor of the initiative. Learners are not entitled to earn college or
other academic credit.

Learners are eligible to receive a Certificate of Achievement for this course through the Haas
School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley Haas). Berkeley Haas is
known for its role in defining a new generation of business leaders with a focus on social impact.
Ranked #2 among all business school nonprofit programs in the United States (US News &
World Report, 2017), Berkeley Haas inspires and empowers innovative solutions to pressing
social and environmental challenges through the work of the Institute for Business and Social
Impact (IBSI) and the Center for Social Sector Leadership (CSSL).

To earn a Certificate of Achievement for this course, you need to earn more than 50% of
possible points on quizzes and assignments to obtain a passing grade. Quizzes are worth 15%
of your total score, while assignments are worth 85%.
