Assignment

This document provides instructions for an assignment in dynamics that is divided into two parts. Part A involves group work to solve seven dynamics problems. Part B is individual work and requires a one page reflection on the course content and teaching/learning experiences of MEC420: Dynamics. The assignment is due on June 21st by 2:00 PM and late submissions will be penalized. Solutions must include free body diagrams, calculations, assumptions, and justification. Marks will be awarded based on the quality of the solution, description of solution steps, and presentation/formatting.

Instruction
1. Solution shall include all free-body and kinetics diagrams, calculations, plots, assumptions and
justification, as deemed necessary. Marks will be awarded or deducted accordingly. [60% marks
will be awarded to the solution].
2. Briefly describe the steps of your solutions (such as the fundamental applied and justifications).
[30% marks will be awarded to your efforts].
3. This assignment shall be submitted in a report format with good and neat presentation.
Attention shall be especially given to units, vector writing and labelling your answer. [10% marks
will be awarded to your submission & presentation].
4. Answer all questions. Part A is group work whilst Part B is individual work which shall be
submitted together as part of the report.

PART A (GROUP WORK)

Q1. For the position shown where  = 30O, point A on the sliding collar has a constant velocity v = 0.3
m/s with corresponding lengthening of the hydraulic cylinder AC. For this same position BD is
horizontal and DE is vertical. Determine the angular acceleration DE of DE at this instant.

Q2. The disk rolls without slipping on the horizontal surface. If the disk has a clockwise angular velocity
0 = 20 rad/s and a counter-clockwise acceleration 0 = 5 rad/s2 at the instant under consideration,
determine the velocity and acceleration of pin A relative to the slotted member BC. And the angular
velocity and angular acceleration of link BC. The value of r is 200 mm. Neglect the distance from the
centre of pin A to the edge of the disk.
Q4. The figure illustrates a commonly used quick-return mechanism which produces a slow cutting
stroke of the tool (attached to D) and a rapid return stroke. If the driving crank OA is turning at the
constant rate ̇ = 3 rad/s, determine the magnitude of the velocity of point B for the instant when  =
300.

Q5. Two identical uniform rods of mass 50 kg each and two identical uniform disks of radius 0.4 m and
mass 10 kg each are pinned together as shown. If the system starts from rest when  = 60o, and the disks
o
roll without slipping, determine the angular velocities of the rods and the disk when  = 30 . Initially
the spring with negligible mass and stiffness k = 100 N/m is unstretched. Given that AB=BC=AD=DE=0.8
m.
Q6. The rectangular plate, with a mass of 6 kg and a uniform small thickness, is welded at the 45o angle
to the vertical shaft, which rotates with the angular velocity of 60 rad/s. Determine the angular
momentum of the plate about O, HO, and find the kinetic energy of the plate.

Q7. A homogeneous disk of mass m=5 kg has a radius of gyration of 80mm about y-axis, attached to the
support arm ABCD of dimensions l=0.3 m and a=0.2 m, is rotating with respect to y-axis with an angular
velocity of ωs = 1250 rev/min. Simultaneously, the entire assembly is rotating with respect to X-axis with
an angular velocity of ωp =150 rev/min. Neglecting the mass of arm ABCD, determine

a) The dynamic reactions at bearing supports at A and C.

b) The angular momentum of the plate about point C, HC
c) The kinetic energy of the plate.

PART B (INDIVIDUAL WORK-QUIZ)

In one typed page using 12 point Times New Roman font and 1.5 line spacing (about 450 words),

“In your own words, describe your personal opinion and feedbacks on the MEC420:
Dynamics’ course contents, and teaching & learning experiences”.
