UNIT-I
1. a) Derive the Friis transmission equation with neat diagram. 7 Marks
b) A thin dipole is λ/15 long. If it has loss resistances of 1.5Ω, calculate its directivity and gain. 7 Marks

2. a) Define the terms (i) Polarization (ii) Radiation pattern 8 Marks


b) An antenna receives a power of 2W from a radio station. Calculate its effective area if the 6 Marks
antenna is located in the far zone of the station where E=50mv/m

3. a) Write a short notes on i)Non resonant radiators ii)Helical antenna 7 Marks
b) Derive the expression for radiation fields of a centre fed half wavelength dipole antenna. 7 Marks

4. a) Discuss about loop antenna. What are the disadvantages of loop antenna? What are 7 Marks
applications loop antennas?
b) Give the construction details and radiation pattern of travelling wave antenna. 7 Marks

5. a) What is End fire array and derive the expression for angles of nulls, maxima and half power 7 Marks
points?
b) Derive the expression for Array factor of N-element uniform linear array. 7 Marks

6. a) Deduce an expression for the radiation pattern of an end-fire array with N vertical dipoles. 7 Marks
b) Write short notes on: i) Multiplication array pattern ii) Binomial arrays 7 Marks

b) Discuss different types of horn antennas with neat sketches. 7 Marks

8. a) With reference to paraboloids, explain the following: 7 Marks


i) f/D ratio ii) Spill over and aperture efficiency iii) Front to back ratio iv) Types of feeds.
b) Explain in detail about the measurement of Directivity with neat diagram. 7 Marks

9. a) What should be the polarization of EM wave for the ground wave propagation? Justify. 7 Marks

b) Find the range of LOS system when the receive and transmit antenna heights are 10m and 7 Marks
100m respectively. Take the effective earth’s radius into consideration.
10. a) Explain in detail about Tropospheric wave propagation. 7 Marks
b) A HF radio link has to be established between two points at a distance of 2500 Km on earth’s 7 Marks
surface considering the ionospheric height to be 200 Km and its critical frequency 5 MHz.
Calculate the MUF for the given path.
