1-General
The facilities have been installed in an area west of Azania refinery along the Libyan sea
coastline .the geographic reference of zero pint is located ashore on bench mark of the following
coordinator ,which related to refinery Grid in m:
the new sea water intake and pumping station has been constructed to serve the current and future
requirement of the Azzawiya oil refinery and the associated desalination plant ,which are located
on the coast of Libya approximately 45 km west of Tripoli
-Desalination plant
-Chlorination unit
-Firefhithing system
2-desigen data
The general environmental and site location design data have been indicated
Hereinafter the general design data of the new sea water intake desalination plant facilities have
been enclosed .
Bicarbonate 135mg/l
Calcium 400mg/l
Magnesium(Mg) 1470mg/l
sodium(Na) 12500mg/l
PH 7.9
2.2-Desalinated

service air
From my view or from my visit to the sea water plant i saw that many things to talk about it but
for description the unite i focused on some items , and the plant consists of the following items
-Desludging equipment
-Stop logs
-Chlorination system
The intakes are situated approximately 1m above the sea bed , and 12m below the mean sea level
, some 200 north of the water line .
These intakes are equipped with fixed grid (200mm clearance ), for the first coarse screening of
suspended materials .
The maximum flow rate by the intake pipes will be about 16,551 m³/h with two pipes in operation
and 8,275 m³/h with one pipe only in operation .
The sea water intake entering the intake structure will pass , through four back raked coarse bar
screens into 20m long and 6m wide settling basins , which have been designed to cater for the
maximum floe rate of 16,551 m³/h
The twin hopper shaped invert of each settling basin will provide a sediment capacity of some
75 m³/ and will remove suspended particles grater than 0.3 mm in diameter
Flow from the settling basin will pass into fine screen forbays , which will allow flow to pass
from or both settling basins through either or both of the the two fine screens
The fine screens consist of 9m diameter , 3m wide , cup type drum screens each of sufficient size
to filter the maximum water
The pump basin is divided into two sections , or wet pumps , to permit maintenance of each
section without complete shut-down of the water supply
stop log gats have been provided at the drum entrance and in the dividing wall of the pump basin
feed channel to enable isolation of the either basin section with its drum screen
The two section of the pumps basin contain three independent sets of vertical spindle , suspended
bowl type pumps .
One set named power pumps will provide sea water to the power plant condenser ,oil coolers and
air coolers , and to a chlorination unit
Another set named process pumps will provide sea water to the existing process plants ,existing
desalination and utility plant ,new desalination plant and to swimming pool
The third set named Fire -fighting pumps , will provide sea water to the existing fire fighting
network of the refinery
The pumps will run on a three duty / on stand -by basis to satisfy the maximum power plant and
chlorination plant demand
moreover each pump has a normal rating of 2,440 m³/h and 55m total generated head
These pumps will provide the immediate flow requirement of 4,648 m³/h.
A total process system flow of 10,248 m³/h will be required at a later data .
At that time , two further pumps normally rated at 2,440 m³/h will be installed in two of the three
available position , and the process pumps will then operate on a five duty /one stand - by basis
Two drum screens with automatic backwashing for the fine screening of water have been
provided downstream the settling basins
method of operation
Each drum screen must be driven whenever flows through pumps in operation
If the differential water level across the screen remains below 150mm, the screen drive will
continue to run slow speed
But if the level across the screen increases above 150mm the screen drive will change to high
speed (1,440rpm)and run in that speed until the differential water level drops to 80mm
In case the deferential water level reaches 500mm , a high level alarm will be activated
It is in any case recommended that the screens should rotate at least once a day for a duration of
five minutes
3.3 sea water pumping system
As ,I mentioned above indicated three sets of vertical pumps , power process and fire fighthing
pumps have been provided in the new sea water intake , each feeding a dedicated header in the
main pip trench south of the pump house
The power and process header are interconnected each other , in such a way that process water
can automatically feed the power header in case of low pressure in this header
*power pumps
-Number of pumps 4
*process pumps
-Number of pumps 4
-Number of pumps 5
Each diesel engine of the three diesel driven pumps is equipped with an air start package for its
start which contains a compressed air accumulation tank
In case of emergency if te diesel engine has not started , but the compressed air in the air started
unit tank has been exhausted
*surge vessel
Three surge vessels have been provided east of the pompous
In addition to that , each surge vessel is equipped with the following control /alarm
instrumentation
-level indicator
Such distilled water will be used as feed water to the boilers , and for drinking water supply
For the purpose of this manual , the following points only must be recalled
Feed water to the two units from an existing 24"cooling water line in the refinery area
The units discharge their rejects to the refinery condensate
The distillated water production is stored in the new tank
Injection of CaCL2 and NaHCO3 will be done on the discharge pipe of these pumps as
Indicated
An electro chlorination plant has been provided for the electrolysis of the sea water and the
production of a sodium hypochlorite solution , to be used wherever chlorine injection is needed
for sterilization purpose of the water
