Nvidia Corporation
-is an American technology company
incorporated in Delaware and based in Santa
Clara, California. It designs graphics processing
units (GPUs) for the gaming and professional
markets, as well as system on a chip units (SoCs)
for the mobile computing and automotive market. Its primary GPU product line, labeled
"GeForce", is in direct competition with Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD) "Radeon"
products. Nvidia expanded its presence in the gaming industry with its handheld Shield
Portable, Shield Tablet and Shield Android TV.
The birth of an industry
- Founders Jen-Hsun Huang, Christopher Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem
hatched the idea that became NVIDIA at a Denny's in San Jose in 1993 over
coffee. The modern graphics processor didn't exist then. Huang was an avid
gamer, and they believed there was a vast opportunity to improve upon the
rudimentary graphics available on PCs of the day.
The term GPU has been used from at least the 1980s, it was popularized by Nvidia in
1999, who marketed the GeForce 256 as "the world's first GPU". It was presented as
a "single-chip processor with integrated transform, lighting, triangle setup/clipping,
and rendering engines".

PLAYSTATION 2
- The PlayStation 2 (PS2) is a home
video game console that was
developed by Sony Computer
Entertainment. It is the successor to the
original PlayStation console and is the
second iteration in the PlayStation
lineup of consoles. It was released in
2000 and competed with Sega's
Dreamcast, Nintendo's GameCube and
Microsoft's Xbox in the sixth generation
of video game consoles.
- PlayStation 2 software is distributed on
CD-ROM and DVD-ROM. In addition the console can play audio CDs and
DVD movies, and is backwards compatible with PlayStation games. The PS2
also supports PlayStation memory cards and controllers, although original
PlayStation memory cards only work with original PlayStation games and the
controllers may not support all functions (such as analog buttons) for PS2
games.
- The standard PlayStation 2 memory card has an 8 MB capacity. There are a
variety of non-Sony manufactured memory cards available for the PlayStation
2, allowing for a memory capacity larger than the standard 8 MB.
- The console also features USB and IEEE 1394 (Firewire) expansion ports. A
hard disk drive can be installed in an expansion bay on the back of the
console, and is required to play certain games, notably the popular Final
Fantasy XI. This is only available on certain models.
