General Trinomial: 1st Strategy:Window Method

The document provides two strategies for factorizing trinomial expressions: the window method and the FOIL method. The window method involves identifying the coefficients of the trinomial terms, drawing a window shape with an X inside, and placing the coefficients in various parts of the window to arrive at the factors. The FOIL method involves identifying the first terms of each factor as the variable, determining possible factor pairs for the constant term, and selecting the pair that produces the middle term when using FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last). An example of factoring a perfect square trinomial is provided, which involves checking if the first and last terms are perfect squares, and confirming if the square roots multiplied

GENERAL TRINOMIAL

Ex. You are asked to solve this equation:b^2+8b+7

So the answer will be (b+7)(b+1) How is this you ask?

1st Strategy:Window Method

1st Step: Get the whole numbers of the 3 terms. So a=1 b=8 c=7
2nd Step:Draw a Window like Square and an X beside it.
3rd  Step:  Now  multiply  the  whole  number  of  a  and  c  and  put  it  on  top  of
the  X  and  b  in  the  bottom  and  get  the  Factors  of  the  two  and  put it on the
side.
4th  Step:Put  the  bsquared  in  the  top  left  and  the  square  root  of  it  and  put
in  on  the  top  left  and  bottom  right  and  C  factor  in  the  bottom  right  and
put  in  the  bottom  and  get  the  factors  of  your  X  and  it's  up  to  you  where
you  will  put  it.  Get  the  square  root  of  b  squared  and put it outside the box
and  divide  the  outside  factors  with  the  inside  factors  7b  and  1b  and  the
final product will be (b+7)(b+1).

2nd Strategy:FOIL METHOD

Example:
Factor the following trinomial.
x2
 - 5x + 6
Solution:
Step  1:The  first  term  is  x2,  w
hich  is  the  product  of  x  and  x.  Therefore,  the
first term in each bracket must be x, i.e.
x2
 - 5x + 6 = (x ... )(x ... )
Step  2:  The  last  term  is  6.  The  possible  factors  are  ±1  and  ±6  or  ±2  and ±3.
So, we have the following choices.
(x + 1)(x + 6)
(x - 1)(x - 6)
(x + 3)(x + 2)
(x - 3 )(x - 2)
The only pair of factors which gives -5x as the middle term is (x - 3)(x - 2)
Step 3: The answer is then
x2
 - 5x + 6 = (x - 3 )(x - 2)

PERFECT SQUARE TRINOMIAL

FIRST STEP:FIND/CHECK IF FIRST TERM IS A PERFECT SQUARE !!
SECOND  STEP:  NOW  CHECK/FIND  THIRD  TERM  IF  ITS  A  PERFECT
SQUARE !!
← THIRD  STEP:  THE  SQUARE  ROOT  OF  FIRST  TERM  AND THIRD TERM
MUST  BE  EQUAL  TO  THE  TWICE  PRODUCT  OF  THE  FIRST  AND  THIRD
TERM.!!
TRY THIS!!!
Ex.4x^2+24x+36
1ST STEP: 4x^2 is a PERFECT SQUARE (2x) is the Root Factor
2ND STEP:36 is a PERFECT SQUARE(6) is the Root Factor.
3RD  STEP:  24x  is  the  2nd  term  so  we  multiply.2(2x)(6)=24x  YES
CORRECT!!
