OUTSIDE MANILA CATHEDRAL

The main façade of the Manila Cathedral is graced by statues of famous saints sculpted in Roman travertine
stone. In the old cathedral, they were originally made of molave wood.

The saints are St. Rose of Lima, patroness of the Philippines by Angelo Fattinanzi, St. Jacob the Great, St.
Andrew the Apostle, preacher of the faith in many corners of Asia and patron of saint of Manila, by Livia
Papini; St. Francis Xavier, apostle of the Indies, by Alcide Tico; St. Polycarp, old bishop of Smyrna, by
Alcide Tico; and St. Anthony Abbot, founder of Oriental monasticism, by Livia Papini.
INSIDE MANILA CATHEDRAL

Michelangelo’s “La Pieta” is one of the

world’s most recognized works of art, a
sculpture that beautifully portrays the scene
of faith and sorrow – that of the battered
body of Jesus Christ cradled in the loving
arms of the Virgin Mary. It is a poignant
reminder of the great sacrifice both the
Mother and the Son so willingly endured
for the salvation of man.

This replica of “La Pieta” at the Manila

Cathedral reflects the Filipino Catholics’
strong affinity to Jesus and Mary’s
sacrificial love of mankind. His Eminence
Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, Archbishop
of Manila, officially unveiled and blessed this “La Pieta” on 27 September 2009 in celebration of the Feast
Day of St. Vincent de Paul, the Patron Saint of Charitable Societies.
2. Identify whether the columns are:
Ionic, Doric, Corinthian. Explain briefly.

As we visit Manila Cathedral, we

spotted it to be somehow linked to
Doric or Doric column style. It's because
of the purpose of each column inside /
outside the church to support the
ceiling weight. Although each classical
engineering used columns for this
particular purpose, there is a lot of
variation in just the structures. Doric
order is broader at the base than the
top and that's the primary proof we've
identified and consider saying that
Manila Cathedral has Doric column
style.
