Recycling is important in today’s world if we want to leave this planet for our future generations. It is good
for the environment, since we are making new products from the old products which are of no use to us. There
are many reasons why it’s important to recycle as much as possible.
Making new products out of recycled materials reduces the need to consume precious resources. So
recycling helps protect raw materials and protect natural habitats for the future.
Using recycling materials in the manufacturing process uses considerably less energy than that required for
producing new products from raw materials.
Recycling reduces the need for extracting (mining, quarrying and logging), refining and processing raw
materials all of which create substantial air and water pollution. As recycling saves energy, it also reduces
greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle climate change.
There are over 1,500 landfill sites in the UK and, in 2001, these sites produced a quarter of the UK’s
emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that is released as the biodegradable waste (such as food
and paper) decomposes. Existing landfill sites are filling up fast and there is very limited space for new ones.
A massive reduction in the amount of waste we send to landfill is required if we are to avoid the heavy
fines and the landfill taxes that are being imposed by Central Government on councils that exceed their landfill
allowances. Increases in your Council Tax or service cuts in other areas would be the only way of paying these
penalties.

There are millions of plants and animals living in the sea. Most of the plants and animals living in the
oceans are extremely small and float near the surface of the water in their thousands. They are food for huge
numbers of small animals that also live near the surface. Together, they are all known as plankton.
Many fish feed on this plankton, including one of the largest, the whale shark. Despite their great size,
certain whales live entirely on plankton.
The blue whale is the largest animal ever to live. It grows to a length Of over 100 feet. The humpback
whale is a smaller kind and has long flippers. It can jump right out the water. The Californian grey whale
makes long migrations every year - it spends the summer feeding in the Artic but swims south to the warmer
waters off the coast of Mexico in the winter. The females give birth in the shallow, warm water there.
Many of the fish in the sea may be eaten by other meat-eaters. Sharks, for example, are some of the fastest
hunters, although not all of them eat other fish.
Deep down in the oceans live many strange fish. It is so dark down there that many of these fish have
"light" on them, which are used for attracting smaller fish for the larger ones to eat.
Jellyfish are peculiar-looking creatures ranging in size from a fraction of an inch to 6 feet
across. They don't really swim but drift in the currents of the open oceans. Although they contain
a powerful sting, they are often eaten by turtles. Turtles are reptiles that spend most of their eggs

The Clever Servant
This is an old story. It was first told long ago. A rich man wanted to make a journey to another town.
He was a businessman. He wanted to take things to sell. He also wanted to take gold to buy things with. He
decided to take ten servants with him. They would carry the things to sell and the gold, and also food to eat
on the journey.
He was a kind man. He said to one of his servants, “You are the smallest, the thinnest and the weakest
of all my servants. You cannot carry a heavy load. You must choose the lightest load carry.”
The servants thanked his master for his kindness. He pointed to the biggest load. This was bread to eat
on the journey.
His master said,” You are foolish. That is the biggest and heaviest load.” But the servant picked up the
load cheerfully and the journey began. They walked for four hours. Then they stopped for a rest. They all ate
