B Those in favour of higher fees say that people who don’t go to university shouldn’t have to pay for
graduates who have better careers and earn more. What’s more, higher fees could improve the quality of
teaching because universities will have to compete to attract the best students. This will put pressure on
universities to offer better courses with excellent job opportunities.
C Under the new system, students will be able to borrow money, and they won’t have to pay it back
until they earn more than £21,000 a year. However, the high fees could discourage people from poorer
backgrounds from going to university.
D Seventeen-year-old Tim Adams dreamt of becoming the first graduate in his family, but now he isn’t
sure. ‘The idea of getting into debt before I start work is scary,’ he says. Sarah Andrews did her degree in
Holland, where fees are much lower. ‘I could never have afforded it here, so I went abroad,’ she explains.
Others may follow her example and, with many courses taught in English, Holland is an attractive alternative.
E Finally, many universities may stop offering traditional subjects like history and languages in favour
of job-oriented courses. Instead of being places of learning and personal development, universities could
simply become employment machines. For a nation with an academic tradition, this is a worrying prospect.
