Lesson Plan On Probability and Statistics Grade 11-Gas, Acp & Carpentry I. Learning Competencies

This lesson plan outlines a probability and statistics lesson on random variables for 11th grade students. The lesson will define and illustrate random variables, distinguish between discrete and continuous random variables, and have students identify examples as discrete or continuous. Students will work in groups on activities to practice identifying sample spaces and classifying examples. The teacher will provide instruction and feedback to ensure students understand the key concepts of random variables and the different classes. An evaluation activity and assignment are included to assess student learning.

LESSON PLAN ON PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

GRADE 11- GAS, ACP & CARPENTRY

I. LEARNING COMPETENCIES
At the end of the session, the students are expected to do the following:
a. Illustrate a random variable;
b. Illustrate a probability distribution for a discrete random variable;
c. Compute for the probability distribution of a discrete random variable

II. OBJECTIVES
a. Illustrate random variable;
b. Distinguish between discrete and continuous random variable; and
c. Find the possible values of a random variable.

III. SUBJECT MATTER

PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS
RANDOM VARIABLE
Senior High School Stat Module
TV set, Laptop, PowerPoint Presentation, Chalk and Teaching Aids

IV. PROCEDURE
a. Review/Drill
Ask the students to answer the activity 1 below. It could be answered by trio.
3 students will work together and will write their answers on a manila paper.
Each team will prepare for output reporting.
Activity 1
1. If a box contains 5 red balls and 4 black balls and two balls are drawn in
succession without replacement, what sample space can be made for the
number of black balls?

2. If a committee of 6 is chosen from 5 boys and 3 girls, what sample space

can be made for the number of girls in the committee?

b. Lesson Proper
Teacher’s Input
Random Variable Defined
A random variable is a variable that can take on different values according to
the outcome of an experiment. An experiment is an activity or measurement that
results in an outcome. A random experiment is one whose outcome cannot be
predicted with certainty.
A random variable is described as random because there’s no particular
pattern or it is not known ahead of time exactly what value it will take following the
experiment.
A random variable is a function that associates a unique numerical value with
every outcome of an experiment. The value of the random variable will vary from trial
to trial as the experiment is repeated.

Random variables are usually denoted by capital letters like X, Y, Z,…

Lowercase letters (like x) denote possible values of the random variable. Here are
some examples of a random variable.

1. Experiment: Let X = the number of companies in the fund portfolio.

The possible values of X are 2, 3, 4, ...
2. Experiment: Let Y = the number of shots a basketball player has scored during a
game.
The possible values of Y are 10, 16, 24, ...
3. Experiment: Let Z = the daily temperature during summer. The possible values
of Z are 32.3 °C, 35 °C, 40 °C, ...

C. Activity
Ask the students to answer the activity 2. They have to choose whether the examples
below are continuous or discrete random variable. Same grouping of the activity 1.
Activity 2
Examples:
1. The number of shoppers who enter the mall
2. The number of heads in 5 tosses of a coin
3. The number of chickens in the farm
4. The number of students in a Statistics class from 4:30 – 5:30
5. The number of pews in the church
6. Length of nails produced at a factory
7. Time in 100-meter dash for runners
8. The temperature outdoor
9. The shoe sizes produced at a factory
10. The number of highway fatalities per year in Davao City

D. Teacher’s Input 2
Through Oral Recitation by calling the group randomly, each has to give their
answer on the 10 examples above. Either continuous or discrete random variable.
Their answers will be validated after the teacher’s input on class of random
variable.
Classes of a Random variable
A random variable can be classified either a discrete or continuous random
variable.
Discrete Random Variable: is a numerical random variable that takes on a
countable number of values (there are gaps in the range of possible values).
Examples:
1. The number of shoppers who enter the mall
2. The number of heads in 5 tosses of a coin
3. The number of chickens in the farm
4. The number of students in a Statistics class from 4:30 – 5:30
5. The number of pews in the church

Continuous Random Variable: is a random variable that can take on a value

at any point along an interval.
Examples:

1. Length of nails produced at a factory

2. Time in 100-meter dash for runners
3. The temperature outdoor
4. The shoe sizes produced at a factory
5. The number of highway fatalities per year in Davao City

V. EVALUATION
Attached to this Lesson Plan is the Activity sheet to be used for the evaluation
of students’ understanding on the lesson discussed.

VI. ASSIGNMENT
Study in advance the next lesson/topic which is PROBABILITY Distribution and
prepare for a board work activity next meeting.
