A sensor is a device that detects and responds to some type of input from the physical
environment. The specific input could be light, heat, motion, moisture, pressure, or any
one of a great number of other environmental phenomena.
Transducer
A transducer is any device used to convert energy from one form to another; typically
when converting input energy into output energy. For transduction to occur, a change
from one form of energy must also take place, such as a conversion from mechanical to
electrical energy or vice versa.
Controller
control in engineering and technology is a wide generic term covering the application of
mechanisms to the operation and regulation of processes without continuous direct
human intervention.
It covers the range of application from a household thermostat controlling a boiler, to a
large industrial control system with tens of thousands of input measurements and
output control signals. In control complexity it can range from simple on-off control to
multi-variable high level algorithms.
Converter
converter is an electronic circuit or electromechanical device that converts a source of
direct current (DC) from one voltage level to another. It is a type of electric
power converter. Power levels range from very low (small batteries) to very high (high-
voltage power transmission).
Positioner
Valve positioner - Which ensures the valve has reached the desired degree of opening.
Regulator
A voltage regulator is designed to automatically maintain a constant voltage level. A
voltage regulator may use a simple feed-forward design or may include negative
feedback. It may use an electromechanical mechanism, or electronic components.
Control valve
A control valve is a valve used to control fluid flow by varying the size of the flow
passage as directed by a signal from a controller. This enables the direct control of flow
rate and the consequential control of process quantities such as pressure, temperature,
and liquid level.
Actuator
An actuator's function is to provide thrust and positioning in machines used for
production or testing. One type is the electromechanical actuator, which converts the
torque of an electric rotary motor into linear mechanical thrust.
Relay
The control circuit functions as the coupling between the input and output circuits. In
electromechanical relays, the coil accomplishes this function. A relays Output Circuit is
the portion of the relay that switches on the load and performs the same function as
the mechanical contacts of electromechanical relays.
Servo motor
A servo motor is an entirely different story. ... The function of the servo is to receive a
control signal that represents a desired output position of the servo shaft, and apply
power to its DC motor until its shaft turns to that position.
