Quadratic Inequalities

The document discusses methods for solving quadratic inequalities graphically. It provides steps for sketching the graph of a quadratic function, choosing a test point to determine the shading of the graph, and identifying the solution based on the shaded region. Several examples are worked through applying these steps to solve quadratic inequalities such as x2 - 5x + 6 > 0 and x2 - x - 12 < 0. The solution is given as an interval or union of intervals based on the graph.

Forms of Quadratic Inequalities
y<ax2+bx+c y>ax2+bx+c
y≤ax2+bx+c y≥ax2+bx+c
❧ Graphs will look like a
parabola with a solid
or dotted line and a
shaded section.
❧ The graph could be
shaded inside the
parabola or outside.
Steps for graphing
1. Sketch the parabola y=ax2+bx+c
(dotted line for < or >, solid line for ≤ or ≥)
** remember to use 5 points for the graph!
2. Choose a test point and see whether it is a
solution of the inequality.
3. Shade the appropriate region.
(if the point is a solution, shade where the
point is, if it’s not a solution, shade the
other region)
Example:
Graph y ≤ x2+6x- 4 Test point

* Opens up, solid line x y

-1 -9
* Vertex:
− b − 6(-3,-13) -2 - 12
x= = = −3 -3 - 13
2a 2(1)
-4 - 12
y = (−3) 2 + 6(−3) − 4 -5 -9
= 9 − 18 − 4 = −13
•Test Point: (0,0)
0≤02+6(0)-4
So, shade where the
0≤-4 point is NOT!
Graph: y>-x +4x-3 2
Test Point

* Opens down, dotted

line.
x y
* Vertex:
−b −4(2,1)
x= = =2 0 -3
2a 2(− 1)
1 0

y = − 1(2) 2 + 4(2) − 3 4 1
5 0
y = −4 + 8 − 3 = 1
6 -3
* Test point (0,0)
0>-02+4(0)-3
0>-3
Last Example! Sketch the
intersection of the given inequalities.
1 y≥x2 and 2 y≤-x2+2x+4
SOLUTION!

❧ Graph both on the same

coordinate plane. The
place where the shadings
overlap is the solution.

❧ Vertex of #1: (0,0)

Other points: (-2,4), (-1,1),
(1,1), (2,4)

❧ Vertex of #2: (1,5)

Other points: (-1,1), (0,4),
(2,4), (3,1)

* Test point (1,0): doesn’t

Solving Quadratic Inequalities
Solve the quadratic inequality
x2 – 5x + 6 > 0 graphically.
Procedures:
Step (1): The corresponding quadratic function is
y = x2 – 5x + 6

Step (2): Factorize x2 – 5x + 6,

we have y = (x – 2)(x – 3) ,
i.e. y = 0, when x = 2 or x = 3.

Step (3): Sketch the graph of y = x2 – 5x + 6.

Step (4): Find the solution from the graph.

∴ y = (x – 2)(x – 3) , y
∴ y = 0, when x = 2 or x = 3.
x

We need to solve x 2 – 5x + 6 > 0,
so we choose the portion above the x-axis.
y

The portion of the

graph above the x-axis
represents y > 0
(i.e. x 2 – 5x + 6 > 0)

x
0 2 3
The portion of the
graph below the x-axis
represents y < 0
(i.e. x 2 – 5x + 6 < 0)
y

When x < 2,
y = x − 5x + 6

When x > 3,
the curve is the curve is
above the x-axis above the x-axis
i.e., y > 0 i.e., y > 0
x2 – 5x + 6 > 0 x2 – 5x + 6 > 0

From the sketch, we obtain the solution

x<2 or x>3
Graphical Solution:

Exercise 2: Find the x-intercepts of the curve:
x2 – x – 12 = 0
(x + 3)(x – 4)=0
Solve x − x − 12 < 0.

Answer:
–3 < x < 4

–3 0 4 –3 0 4 x

y = x2 − x − 1
Exercise 3: Find the x-intercepts of the
curve:

–7 0 5
–7 < x < 5

–7 0 5
y = x 2 + 2x
Exercise 4: Find the x-intercepts of the

x = –3 or x = 2/3
Solution: y
3 x ( x + 3 ) ≥ 2( x + 3 )

3 x ( x + 3 ) − 2( x + 3 ) ≥ 0
