1.4 TOOL DESCRIPTION

1.4.1 General Tool Description

The MSFL (Micro-Spherically Focussed Log) is a pad-type miniat ure version of the SFL (Spherically
Focussed Log) that was developed to eliminate borehole effects and achieve superior shallow
investigation. The Microlog is a three-electrode, non-focuse d, pad-mounted electrical logging device.
The MSFL-C tool is a stand alone tool that can be run alone or combined with any DITS toolstring
other than a DLLT.

The MSFL measurement in volves only the first few inches of the formation immediately adjacent to
the borehole, the flushed zone (R xo), in which drilling fluid has displaced all formation fluids. The
MSFL log provides a measurement of the flushed zone resistivity with low mudcake correction.
Micro resistivity logs can be used to provide an indication of porosity, permeability and S xo (water
saturation in the flushed zone). The electrodes for the MSFL are imbedded in a insulating pad
mounted on a powered caliper arm. A caliper curve is usually provided with the resistivity
measurement. The caliper curve is useful for calc ulating cement volume, bore hole volume, and mud
cake thickness. The microlog measurement helps determine pe rmeable zones. It does this by sensing
the presence or absence of mudcake. Permeable zones allow mud filtrate to invade the formation,
which results in mudcake buildup. Zones that are not p ermeable do not allow mud filtrate to invade
the formation.

1.4.2 Nature of MSFL Measureme nt

The MSFL (Figure 1-1) investigation is made

by pad-mounted electrodes to achieve a
spherically focussed survey current that is
dynamically maintained. The measurement
electrode array consists of a survey current
electrode (A0), a voltage monitor electrode
(M 0), a focussing current electrode (A 1), and
two monitor electrodes (M 1 and M 2). These
electrodes are configured as concentric,
rectangular rings on a flexible pad. When the
pad is pressed against the borehole wall
(minimizing borehole effects on the resistivity
measurement), the A0 electrode emits current
directly into the formation, returning to the
mandrel body (current return) and to the A 1
electrode. Only the survey current I 0 is
measured although the focussing current I b is
also emitted from the A 0 electrode (returning
to A1). Any potential difference between
Figure 1-1: MSFL Current Flow
Page 5
WIRELINE FOM SECTION 1 MSFL-C
REV.DATE 11/11/96 GENERAL INFORMATION

monitors M1 and M 2 is detected as an error voltage and the drive amplitude to the A 1 electrode is
adjusted to corre ct for the error, thus dynamically focussing the survey current around the monitor
pair. The focussing monitors are located outside the focussing ring (A 1), between the A 1 electrode
and the current return.

The measured voltages be tween the M 0 electrode and the M 1/M2 center tap are on surfaces of equal
potential which ap proximate hemispherical-spherical shape. This voltage measurement excludes the
region immediately adjacent to the A 0 electrode, thus minimizing borehole fluid and mudcake
influences in the resistivity measurement.

The pad size and electrode spacing determine th e investigation region. They are such that the region
is located deep enough to avoid the mudcake, to a large extent, b ut not too deep as to be significantly
influenced by the uninvaded zone.

The MSFL is a ratio measurement. Both the voltage and the current are allowed to vary. The
apparent resistivity of the measured region is calculated by dividing the measured voltage by the
measured current and then multiplying by a tool constant (a number derived from the geometry of
the electrode array).

Where: R = Formation Resistivity

k = Tool constant
V0 = Survey Voltage
I0 = Survey Current

Page 6
WIRELINE FOM SECTION 1 MSFL-C
REV.DATE 11/11/96 GENERAL INFORMATION

1.4.3 Nature of Microlog Measurement

The Microlog (Figure 1-2) makes two resistivity

measurements: a 2-inch normal and 1.5-inch
lateral. The three electrodes, spaced one inch
apart, are positioned vertically on an insulated
pad. The depth of investigation of the normal
measurement is about four inches and the depth
of investigation of the Lateral measurement is
about 1.5 inches. During logging, the upper
button emits a constant ac current that returns
(relatively remote) to the sonde body. The 2-
inch normal is recorded by measuring the
potential between the bottom button and the
sonde mass. The lateral measurement is
recorded by measuring the potential between the
middle and bottom buttons. These measured
voltages are used to determine apparent
resistivity.

When no mudcake is present (usually indicating

an impermeable zone), both the normal and
lateral log curves will read the same value. The
curves overla y in shales and impermeable sands,
or in carbonates if the resistivity is not too high.
When mudcake exists, it usually has a lower
resistivity than the flushed zone immediately Figure 1-2: Microlog Current Flow
behind it. Since the de pth of investigation of the
lateral measurement is shallower than the
normal, it is influenced more by the mudcake and
thus reads lower resistivity than the normal. A
positive separation between the normal and
lateral curves (normal reads higher than lateral)
usually indicates permeability.

1.5 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

1.5.1 MSFL-C Mandrel Assembly

The mandrel consists of an upper pressure-equalized sec tion and a lower section with two retractable
arms. The upper section contains the piston type pressure equalization mechanism, arm actuating
motor, caliper potentiometer (10 k S), and ball-screw actuator.

The lower section contains the MSFL pad and the wear shoe and/or the Microlog pad..

1.5.2 MSFL-C Instrument Section

The Instrument Assembly contains the low voltage power supplies, the Remote Telemetry Unit
(RTU), the Rem ote Telemetry Unit Interface (RTU I/F) boards, and the majority of the circuitry to
perform the MSFL and/or Microlog survey (See Figure 1-3).

Remote Telemetry Unit (RTU), 3.85601

The RTU is a standard telemetry interface and is capable of processing parallel or serial data. The
RTU receives operational commands from the DSTU (or D2TS) which place the MSFL-C in its
various modes of operation and transmit digitized telemetry data to the DSTU (or D2TS).

Remote Telemetry Unit Interface (RTU I/F)

The RTU I/F consists of two circui t board assemblies: the RTU Analog I/F board (3.29786) and the
RTU Logic I/F board (3 .30477). It digitizes the measured signal data and passes them to the RTU.
It also passes commands from the Surface System to the tool switch position circuits.

Page 8
WIRELINE FOM SECTION 1 MSFL-C
REV.DATE 11/11/96 GENERAL INFORMATION

The MSFL Oscillator Board generates 960 Hz sinusoidal and square-wave signals. The sinusoidal
signals are used by the power amplifier board and focus controller board to generate wave forms
which are applied to the A 0 and A 1 electrodes. The square-wave signals drive phase-sensitive
detectors on the focus controller board and measurement board.

The Preamplif ier Board is located in the MSFL pad and amplifies the very small error potential
between the M 1 and M 2 electrodes.

The Focus Controlle r Board takes the error signal from the preamplifier board and processes it into
a drive signal for the A 1 power amplifier.

The Power Amplifier Board consists of tw o power amplifiers. Each amplifier consists of two power
operationa l amplifiers that are configured as differential amplifiers to drive accompanying power
transformers. The output of the transformers couples the electrode drive current to the MSFL
electrodes.

The Measurement Board measures both the survey potential (V 0) and the survey current (I 0) of the
MSFL. The V 0 measurement is made across the M 0 electrode and the M 1/M2 transformer center tap.
This potential is sensed by an instrumentation amplifier, band-pass filtered, synchronously rectified
by the PSD, and filtered by the low-pa ss filter to produce the dc telemetry value that is routed to the
RTU interface. The I 0 measurement is made by the current transformer in series with the secondary
of the A0 drive transformer. The signal is sensed by a current amplifier, band-pass filtered, rectified
by the PSD, and low-pass filtered to produce its dc telemetry signal.

The Caliper Measurement Board provides a dc output voltage indicative of the potentiometer wiper
position. The caliper sensor is a 10k-ohm linear p otentiometer which senses the distance between the
MSFL pad and the wear shoe on the backup arm.

The Contact board provides the survey current to the transm itter button on the Microlog pad. It also
has the circuitry to measure the lateral and normal responses, and the internal calibration circuitry
(CAL/ZERO).

2.1.1 Preparation

Inspect the MSFL calibration box, cable leads, and clamps for damage, dirt and corrosion. Ensure
that the connections between the jig and the MSFL calibration box are in good mechanical and
electrical condition. The male and female connectors should be cleaned prior to each usage to ensure
calibration integrity.

Clean and dry the MSFL pad electrodes prior to calibration. Ensure that the MSFL electrodes are
free of corrosion and oxidation in the area of calibrator contact.

Perform a PM-1 on the MSFL (mandrel and instruments), the DITS cable head, and wireline.

Set up the tool as shown in Figure 2-1. (The Gamma ray is not required for MSFL calibration).

Page 1
WIRELINE FOM SECTION 2 MSFL-C
REV.DATE 11/11/96 OPERATION

Power up the MSFL-C assembly using W5 from the surface power supply and monitor the
instrument null meter on the Power Cont rol Panel. Upon power up, the tool mode should default to
the MSFL calibrate position. Check the TDU for the proper address and mode status.

The MSFL mandre l must be in the open position to attach the calibrator assembly. Open up the
caliper arms and attach the calibration fixture.

Connect the MSFL current return clamp directly to the mandrel body to ensure a satisfactory
electrica l connection. Verify that all the calibrator contacts are firmly against the MSFL electrode
surface.

Allow the tool to warm up for approximately 20 minutes before beginning the calibration process.

2.1.2 MSFL Shop Calibrations

Note

The Shop calibration should be performed every 30 days, but it is also required if a major repair
is made or a new software logging program is being used. Calibrate the tool if calibrating for
the first time, or if a ne w software version is released, or if previous calibration records are not
available.

The calibration box contains a set of resistors which represent resistivities for the entire dynamic
range of the tool. The box has five different values but only three are used in the shop calibration.

The three resistors most often used represent formations of 0.2 ohmmet er, 20 ohmmeters, and 2,000
ohmmeters.

The shop calibrations steps are as follows:

1. Calibration Box # 1
2. Calibration Box # 2
3. Calibration Box # 3
4. Ve Zero
5. Ia Zero
6. Internal Reference

Enter the reference value f or the first external calibration point. Allow the values to stabilize before
taking the readings.

Once finished with the first external point, switch the calibrator to the next desired value and take the
readings.

The gains and offsets are determined at the completion of the third calibration box measurement.

Once all the external box readings have been completed, the system takes the internal calibration
readings for use during the field verificati on sequence. The calibration box must be disconnected for
the Ia in-air reading.

Upon completion of the calibration steps, the system displays the calibration data on the screen. If
the values are within the specified tolerances, update the calibration file and exit the calibration
routine. If there is any doubt about any of th e values, the engineer has the option to repeat any steps
or abort the calibration.

MSFL Shop Calibration Problems

Most of the problems encountered with the MSFL are a result of poor c onnections on the MSFL pad.
Careful cleaning and placement of the MSFL calibration fixture will eliminate most calibration
problems with the M SFL. If the tool has been repaired or modified, check for correct wiring of the
preamplifier circuitry on the back side of the pad.

Refer to troubleshooting in the maintenance section for additional information.

2.1.3 Microlog Calibration

The microlog shop calib ration tailors the logging software around two calibration standards. These
standards are known resistivity values and they are obtained from an external calibrator (3.45004).
The table below lists computed resistor values for various formation resistivities. Two known
resistivity values are chosen for the shop calibration. One value represents the low end (open circuit)
of the microlog range. The s econd value represents the mid-range resistivity value (20 ohmmeters).
Alternate calibration resistivity standards from the table below can be plugged into the external
calibrator for different calibration ranges.

After the calibrator is strapped onto a clean microlog pad and making the proper connections to the
mandrel body, readings at the low an d mid-range resistivity calibration points are collected using the
logging system. From the obtained rea dings, measurement gains and offsets are calculated using the
linear response formula: Y = mX + b.

See the table on page 7 for typical microlog calibration values.

1. Strap the microlog calibrator on the cleaned microlog pad as shown in Figure 2-2. The
spring-loaded normal, lateral, and current transmitter button s on the calibrator must be in firm
contact with their corresponding pad buttons.

2. Connect the return clamp to the body of the powered mandrel. Do not connect it to the
caliper arm or the pad.

3. Set the calibrator to NOISE. From the logging system keyboard, set Cal Point to zero (0),
and perform Cal Point One.

4. Set the calibrator to LAT-NOR. From the logging system keyboard, set Cal Point 2 to 20,
and perform Cal Point 2.

5. Perform the internal Cal Zero check. The calculated gains and offsets are applied to this
reading to produce TOOL ZERO. This is used for comparison purposes during the field
check.

6. Perform the internal Cal High check. The calculated gains and offsets are applied to the
readings to produce an INTERNAL REFERENCE. This is used for comparison purposes
during the field check.

2.1.4 Caliper Shop Calibration

The caliper master calibration is a simple two-point linear calibration and uses two rings of known
diameters. Select the calibration ring sizes so that the expected hole sizes to be logged are within the
range of the calibration rings.

1. Remove the MSFL test box and leads.

2. Lubricat e the pad and caliper linkage prior to calibration to ensure free movement of the
caliper arms.

WARNING

Keep hands awa y from the caliper during motoring operations. The caliper arms are capable of
crushing fingers and hands if caught in the caliper or calibration rings.

3. Place the first caliper ring around the arms of the MSFL pad and backup shoe. Close the
mandrel to install and remove the rings, if necessary.

Page 7
WIRELINE FOM SECTION 2 MSFL-C
REV.DATE 11/11/96 OPERATION

4. Rotate the tool to allo w the caliper arms to extend parallel to the surface (to the sides of the
mandrel, not up and down). This is done to reduce t he effect of the weight of the calibration
ring.

5. Take the reading for the first ring.

6. Remove the first ring and replace it with the second ring.

7. Take the reading for the second ring.

Upon completion of the calibration sequence, the syste m displays the calibration values for each part
of the calibration. If the values are acceptable, exit the calibration routine; otherwise you will have
the option to redo any step or abort the calibration.

Shop Calibration Problems, MSFL Caliper

Any mechanical adjustment on the MSFL mandrel will alter the caliper tool values. If the tool has
been repaired or modified you should calibrate the caliper twice, even if the first calibration is in
tolerance.

2.1.5 Field Verification

MSFL Before Survey Field Verification

The MSFL tool's "before-survey fiel d verification" is a verification of the tool's response to a known
standard: the internal calibration network of the tool. The response to the internal reference is
expected to agree with the value determined during the master calibration, within a specified tolerance
of ±0.8 ohm-m. If the before-survey field verification is outside of the specified tolerance, then
another tool is recommended.

The field verification steps are as follows:

1. Ve Zero *

2. Ia Zero *

3. Internal Resistor Network

*
These readings are not used for any calculations. Depending on the software version, these steps may be optional and
are only used for a full field calibration.

Page 8
WIRELINE FOM SECTION 2 MSFL-C
REV.DATE 11/11/96 OPERATION

Microlog Before-Survey Verification

The two-point calibration (tool zero and internal ref erence) is used for both before- and after-checks.

1. The tool is sw itched to an internal low-resistance network and a reading is taken. The
calculated gains and offsets are applied to this reading to produce TOOL ZERO, which is
used for comparison purposes during the after-check.

2. The tool is switched to an internal resistance network and readings are again taken. The
calculated gains and offsets are applied to these readings to produce an INTERNAL
REFERENCE, which is used for comparison purposes during the after-check.

3. Readings taken in steps 1 and 2 are compared with similar readings taken during the shop
calibration.

Caliper Before-Survey Field Verification

Depending on the version of software being used, the caliper on the stand alone MSFL tool may
require a sing le-step field verification or a two-step verification using caliper rings. The single-step
verification measures the ring size with the shop calibration values and compares the results to the
reference value. The two-step verification is identical to the shop calibration procedure. New
calibration values are calculated and compared with the previous val ues. If the values are in tolerance,
the new values are used for logging. The specified tolerance for the ca liper is ±0.5 inch. If the before-
survey field verification is outside of the specified tolerance, then another tool is recommended or
another master calibration should be performed followed by another field verification.

The field verification steps are as follows:

1. Small Ring

2. Large Ring

Caliper After-Survey Field Verifications

The before- and after-survey field verifications are identical. Follow the same procedure as the
Before-Survey Field Verification.

2.2 TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING, AND STORAGE

No special precautions are required for transporting and storing the MSFL-C tool.

When the MSFL calibrator is not in use, it must be closed with the cable leads and jig inside, and
stored in a dry place to avoid dirt and corrosion.

2.3 WELLSITE OPERATIONS

2.3.1 Preparation

WARNING

Keep clear of the pads and linkage when operating the mandrel; the pad linkage can inflict
serious injuries.

The MSFL-C must be run centralized to open the pads and log it properly. The top adapter sub on
the MSFL-C sonde is not in line with the tool "key" and must be run above all decentralized tools in
the string (e.g., DSNT-A). Standoffs must be installed above and below the pad. (These standoffs
are not recommended for borehole diameters less than 6.25 inches.) A knuckle joint (3.00958) must
be installed between the MSFL-C and the DSNT-A. A slip-over centralizer should be installed on
the DSTU (or D2TS). These centralizers and standoffs ensure that the MSFL pad and/or the
Microlog pad is not in contact with the borehole wall and is centralized. This centralizer scheme
ensures that the MSFL pad and/or the Microlog pad gives good log data.

The MSFL-C Mandrel, with a standard pad (707.09866), is used for boreholes with diameters
greater 6.25 inches. For borehole diameters le ss than 6.25 inches, run the MSFL without centralizers
or standoffs, and replace the standard MSFL pad with the slimhole pad (707.11412).

CAUTION

Do not opera te the mandrel with low oil levels. The pressure balance system must be free of
air and full of oil to prevent tool damage.

There are no input parameters which affect the MSFL log output.

If annular hole volume (AHV) is to be presented, casing diameter of the casing string to be run is
required.

2.3.2 Logging

It is generally a good idea to perform a casing check at the casing shoe.

Verify that the tool is in the log mode after opening the caliper arms.

Conductivity and resistivi ty corrections are available for the MSFL. Refer to the logging procedure
in the DLLT section of the Field Operations manual for details.

A caliper offset is also available to adjust the caliper reading.

Page 12
WIRELINE FOM SECTION 2 MSFL-C
REV.DATE 11/11/96 OPERATION

2.3.3 Post Job

The MSFL and Microlog after-survey verification can be performed in the well, but the caliper
requires the tool to be out of the hole (for ring placement).

The tool sho uld be thoroughly washed after removal from the wellbore. Pay particular attention to
the pressure balance area.

Spray a light lubricant on the linkages of the MSFL-C caliper.

Page 13

2.4 LOG QUALITY CONTROL

The tool serial number and tool positi on in the borehole (centralized or standoff) should be noted on
the log heading along with remarks about any intervals where the log readings were affected by
washed-out or sticky boreholes.

Formation resistivities vary over an extremely wide range, from less than one ohm-m in some salt-
water-saturated reservoir rocks to greater than 10,000 ohm-m in evaporites such as anhydrite.

The MSFL will read in the range of 0.2 ohm-m to 2,000 ohm-m. The Microlog will read in the range
of 0 ohm-m to 100 ohm-m.

The MSFL may show some non-repeatability if the pad has followed a different path along the
borehole wall, but in general this curve should show excellent repeatability. New pads have shown
a need to be logged a few hundred feet before they will repeat well. The MSFL should have an
improved signal to noise ratios at higher resistiviti es due to the pad-mounted preamp, thus improving
repeatability in hard rock zones.

In homogeneous shales, the MSFL resistivity should overlay other resistivity curves, typically in the
resistivity range 1 ohm-m to 10 ohm-m.

In reservoir rocks, an invasi on profile will be observed which depends on the fluid resistivities in the
flushed, invaded or transition, and uninvaded zones.

In non-porous rocks (commonly anh ydrite and salt) or low porosity formations (typically limestones
or dolomites), the log readings may be around or in excess of 2,000 ohm-m.

In deviated wells, erroneously low (and smooth) MSFL readings may be the result of the tool lying
on its backup arm and collapsing with the pad facing upwards. Check the caliper reading while
logging. (It will consistently indicate less than Bit Size in this situation.) A second cause could be
large mudcake build up on the MSFL pad.

The most common problem affecting the MSFL curve is pad damage. Do not spud the tool!

Repeat any questionable sections, if hole conditions permit and with client approval.

Log Corrections

The MSFL resistivities require considerable borehole corrections for mud-cake effects.

Corrections can be applied using the Chart: xo - 1 MSFL Mud Cake Corrections.

3.2 TROUBLESHOOTING

Most of the problems encountered with the MSFL-C are the result of poor connections of the MSFL
and/or Microlog pad. If the tool passes the field verification, but does not respond correctly when
logging, check the pad wiring for damaged boots and poor connections. If the pad has just been
replaced, check the pad for correct wiring (See Figure 3-2).
