Fire Hazards

Fire hazard is the most common hazard, which is present in all areas. Related
concepts to this are the fire triangle, causes of the fire, and the phases of fire
emergency.
1.) Fire Triangle
- The fire triangle is a simple way of understanding the elements of fire.
The sides of the triangle represent the interdependent ingredients
needed for fire: heat, fuel and oxygen.

A heat source is responsible

Fuel is any kind of combustible

material. It’s characterized by
its moisture content, size, shape,
quantity and the arrangement
in which it is spread over the
landscape.

2.) Causes of Fire

- A fire may occur without our intentions. We must be aware of the
common things in our surroundings that may cause a fire.
The top 3 causes of fire in the Philippines:

 Faulty electrical connections

Faulty electrical connections are by far the most common cause of
fire in the Philippines. This problem can come from old wiring,
improper connections, or sometimes due to an overload problem.
 Cigarette butts
People sometimes neglect to put out the cigarette properly, and
then put it in a trash can or someplace where it causes a fire.

 Open flames from unattended stoves

It’s important to never leave any open stove unattended. And
make sure to turn off the gas main after cooking. This helps prevent
any gas explosions or open flames that can start a house fire.

3.) Phases of Fire Emergency

The four phases:
Mitigation
Mitigation refers to measures that reduce the chance of an
emergency happening, or reduce the damaging effects of
unavoidable emergencies

Preparedness
Preparedness activities increase a community’s ability to respond
when a disaster occurs

Response
The response phase includes the mobilization of the necessary
Fire Crew Response emergency services and first responders in
the disaster area.

4.) Prevention
Here are some ways you can prevent a fire:
1. Blow out candles before leaving a room or going to bed.
2. When cooking, keep towels, pot holders and curtains away
from flames.
3. Keep matches, lighters and other ignitable substances in a
secured location out of the reach of children, and only use
lighters with child-resistant features.
4. Keep fire in your fireplace by using a glass or metal fire screen
large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs
5. Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease
buildup.
