Faculty Database Project Report in Labview

This document describes a mini project report for an alarm clock created by three students - N. Sai Krishna, N. Pavan Kumar, and O. Sai Dinesh. It was submitted to the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at KL University in October 2018 under the supervision of a Mr. Biraj Shougaijam. The project involved designing an alarm clock that uses an LED to glow when the set time is reached. The report includes sections on acknowledgments, an abstract describing alarm clocks, and conclusions about potential future work.

ABSTRACT

An alarm clock (alarm for short) is a clock that is designed to alert an individual or
group of individuals at specified time. The primary function of these clocks is to
awaken people from their night's sleep or short naps; they are sometimes used for
other reminders as well. Most use sound; some use light or vibration. To stop the
sound or light, a button or handle on the clock is pressed; most clocks automatically
stop the alarm if left unattended long enough. In this project, the main theme is to
design a alarm clock which glows a LED whenever the designed time comes.

INTRODUCTION
LabVIEW is an icon-based software allowing control of processes and
instrumentation, and creation of virtual instruments (VI’s) on the PC. The
LabVIEW programming language is generally easier to write and understand than
traditional text-based programming languages.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

This project uses the capabilities of LabVIEW to display the current time of the
computer in a digital form on the computer screen. The program serves as a useful
introduction to the capabilities of LabVIEW as a programming language.

The LabVIEW function, Get Date/Time In Seconds, gets the time from the
computer and returns a value that represents the number of seconds that have
passed since January 1, 1904.
EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS
CONCLUSION AND FUTURE SCOPE
The clock was purchased several years prior from Goodwill. Initially, the retro
styling, and the annoyingly effective nature of the buzzer mechanism made it a
favorite. However, the shortcomings quickly came to light under a typical highly
variable college sleep schedule. Every night required preparation by manually
turning the unidirectional alarm wheel and resetting the alarm to the on position.
Once the alarm started to sound, there was no snooze mechanism or alarm reset to
stop the alarm. Additionally, when it was time to make up for lost sleep, the nature
of the clock mechanism allowed for a maximum of 12 hours of sleep. Eventually,
the alarm functions of a cell phone replaced it as the preferred alarm clock.
Today, we are seeing a resurgence of retro style. In fact, "flip style" alarm clocks
can be purchased new from various retailers. However, by reusing the old clock we
can promote recycling, maintain the high build quality, and also make for a great
project. At the same time, we were able to incorporate daily alarm features
normally found only on more high end modern alarm clocks.
