Name of the Course: Statistical modeling

COURSE OBJECTIVES: To obtain an understanding of the foundations of statistical inference


and the practical skill of fitting and evaluating multiple regression models.

LEARNING GOALS ADDRESSED:

Comprehensive knowledge and application of management research methods. Multiple regression


analysis, which is the core subject matter of this course, is perhaps the most used tool among
quantitative research methods. In addition, understanding the limitations of the methodology is equally
important, and the course will develop a critical approach to this, by focusing on the assumptions and
correct interpretation of the regression model and its related inferences.

Communication of research based insights.

The practical in-class labs will give students a platform to hone their communications skills as they
present their results to the class. In addition, a final written project will give students the opportunity to
write a technical research document, but with a focus on presenting results in a suitable manner for a
general management audience.

JMP version 13 or 14, statistical software.
Required book: Stine & Foster (2013). Statistics for Business: Decision Making and Analysis. Addison
Wesley. Second Edition.

Available from the LRC:

PRE- READINGS AND PRE ASSIGNMENTS FOR THE CLASS:


Skim Stine and Foster Chapters 1 through 5 for background material.
Read Stine Chapters 13 and 14.
GRADING COMPONENTS:
Grading will be based on the components below. You can however change as per the
requirements of the course. Please note that the percentage allocated to any one component
of the overall grades should not exceed 40%.
Students will need to bring a laptop computer to class, loaded with the JMP software to
do the labs.
