Activity Type Introduction


Listening and speaking In this engaging teaching activity, students play a game of bingo
activity, group work by describing people, places and things using defining relative
clauses.

Language Focus Procedure


Defining relative clauses
Divide the class into groups of four. Groups of three are also
possible.
Aim Give each student in the group a bingo card.
To play a game of bingo Also, give each group a set of word cards.
by describing people,
places and things using Ask the students to shuffle the word cards and place them face
defining relative clauses. down in a pile on the desk.

The students take it in turns to take a card from the top of the
Preparation pile and describe the person, place or thing on the card using a
defining relative clause.
Make one copy of the
cards for each group of Examples:
four. Cut out the bingo
cards and word cards as It is a person who...
indicated. It is a place where...

It is something that/which...
Level
The student giving the description is not allowed to say the word
Pre-intermediate or use variations of the word.

The other students in the group try to guess the word.


Time
When the word has been guessed, the students who have the
25 minutes word on their bingo card cross it off.

If the students are having difficulty guessing the word, the student
who is describing can give more definitions.

The next student then picks up a word card and so on.

The first student to cross off all the words on their card shouts
'bingo' and wins the game.
