1-3 Reflection

Unit 1 Lesson 3 provides a worksheet and guide for a video on wires, cables, and WiFi. It defines key vocabulary like bit, bandwidth, and latency. It compares the pros and cons of different communication methods like copper wire, fiber-optic cable, and radio waves. Copper wire is common for electricity but loses signal, while fiber-optic is expensive and difficult to work with. Radio waves allow mobility but have short range.

Unit 1 Lesson 3

Name(s) Sara Period 3 Date 9/20/2019

Worksheet - Video Guide for “Wires, Cables & WiFi”

Vocabulary

Bit: A contraction of "Binary Digit"; the single unit of information in a computer, typically represented as a 0 or 1

Bandwidth: Transmission capacity measure by bit rate

Bit Rate: The number of bits that are conveyed or processed per unit of time. e.g. 8 bits/sec

Latency: Time it takes for a bit to travel from its sender to its receiver

Why is it important to communicate a timing protocol prior to sending messages?

Pros Cons

Cheap Signal loss

Electricity

Really fast Expensive

Light No signal loss Hard to work with

Totally mobile Short range

Radio Waves

Where is copper wire most commonly used? Why don’t we use it everywhere?

It is used to transport information via electricity. However, there is a degree of signal loss involved with
using the copper wire and electricity method

Where is fiber-optic cable most commonly used? Why don’t we use it everywhere?

Fiber-optic cables are used underwater

They are too expensive and hard to work with

Where are radio waves most commonly used? Why don’t we use them everywhere?

They are used to transmit information from a mobile device to a device that is connected to
wires that can transfer the data further distances
